Steel Blue Killie
The Steel Blue Killie (Lamprichthys tanganicanus) is an eye-catching freshwater fish known for its striking blue coloration and active behaviour. Native to the African Great Lakes, this species is popular among aquarists for its vibrant appearance and lively nature.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: Steel Blue Killies typically grow to about 5-7 cm (2-2.8 inches) in length.
- Coloration:
- Body: The body is predominantly bright blue, often with shimmering scales that reflect light beautifully.
- Fins: Their fins are generally translucent with hints of blue, adding to their overall appeal.
- Shape: They have a slender, elongated body, which is characteristic of many killifish species.
Behaviour:
- Temperament: Steel Blue Killies are generally peaceful but can exhibit territorial behaviour, especially among males. It's best to keep them in a community tank with other non-aggressive species.
- Activity Level: They are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, often seen darting around the tank.
- Community Behaviour: Steel Blue Killies do well in community tanks but should be housed with similar-sized, peaceful fish to prevent bullying or stress.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Steel Blue Killies.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: They thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
- pH: A slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 is preferred.
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-10 dGH, is ideal.
- Tank Setup:
- Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended. Steel Blue Killies appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming space. Live plants, driftwood, and rocks create a natural environment that reduces stress.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is best, with floating plants providing shaded areas and helping to diffuse the light.
- Filtration: A gentle filtration system is essential to maintain water quality. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are important for their health.
Diet:
Steel Blue Killies are omnivorous and require a balanced diet:
- Flakes: High-quality flakes or pellets should form the staple of their diet.
- Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to provide essential protein and variety.
- Occasional Treats: Small freeze-dried foods can be given occasionally, but should not replace their main diet.
Breeding:
Breeding Steel Blue Killies is possible but requires specific conditions:
- Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water and spawning mops or fine-leaved plants is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5).
- Spawning Behaviour: The male will court the female, and after spawning, the female will lay eggs in the spawning mop or plants.
- Fry Care: Once the fry hatch, they can be fed infusoria or finely crushed flakes until they are large enough for larger foods.
Special Considerations:
- Jumping: Steel Blue Killies are known for their jumping ability, so ensure the tank is covered to prevent escapes.
- Water Quality: Maintaining clean water and good tank conditions is crucial for their health.
