Overview:
Bolbitis heudelotii, commonly known as the African Water Fern, is a graceful and elegant aquarium plant valued for its deep green, translucent fronds and flowing appearance. Native to fast-moving rivers and streams in West Africa, this fern brings a natural, riverbank aesthetic to planted aquariums.
Its delicate, lace-like leaves create movement and texture, making it an excellent accent or focal plant when attached to driftwood or rocks. Bolbitis heudelotii is especially popular in nature-style aquascapes and shaded layouts.
Care and Growth:
This plant thrives under low to moderate lighting and prefers stable water conditions with gentle to moderate flow. CO₂ injection can encourage faster growth and healthier fronds, but it is not essential. Regular liquid fertilisation supports steady development.
The rhizome should never be buried in the substrate, as this can cause rot. Attach the plant to hardscape using thread or aquarium-safe glue. Propagation is achieved by dividing the rhizome once the plant has matured.
