Calvus Cichlid

The Calvus Cichlid (Altolamprologus calvus) is a captivating species of cichlid native to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Known for its unique body shape and peaceful temperament, it is highly prized by aquarium enthusiasts. The Calvus Cichlid is notable for its elongated body and large eyes, which give it a striking and elegant appearance.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Calvus Cichlids typically grow to about 10-12 cm (4-5 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: These fish are generally light brown or greyish, with darker markings that form a distinctive pattern along their body. Some varieties may also exhibit subtle blue or green hues.
  • Fins: The fins of the Calvus Cichlid are long and flowing, particularly the dorsal fin, which is quite large and pointed. Their fins give them a graceful, almost angelic appearance.
  • Shape: The body of the Calvus Cichlid is elongated and somewhat compressed, giving it a streamlined, torpedo-like shape.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: The Calvus Cichlid is a peaceful species that is generally non-aggressive. It can be kept with other peaceful fish but may show territorial behavior when guarding its cave or hiding spot.
  • Activity Level: This species is relatively calm and spends much of its time in hiding or exploring the substrate for food.
  • Community Behavior: Calvus Cichlids are best kept with other peaceful, non-aggressive fish. They may not be suitable for a tank with aggressive species, as they may be intimidated or stressed by more dominant fish.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 150 liters (40 gallons) is recommended for a single Calvus Cichlid, although larger tanks are preferred to accommodate their natural behaviors.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Calvus Cichlids thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly alkaline water, with a pH range of 7.5 to 9.0.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 8-15 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A sandy substrate is ideal, as Calvus Cichlids like to dig. They also enjoy having hiding spots, such as caves or crevices, where they can retreat. Aquascaping with rocks and driftwood helps simulate their natural environment.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is sufficient for the Calvus Cichlid. Floating plants can provide additional shade and create a more natural environment.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress the fish. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are important to maintain a healthy environment.

Diet:

Calvus Cichlids are carnivorous and primarily eat protein-based foods. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets formulated for carnivorous fish should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia to provide variety and essential nutrients.
  • Occasional Treats: You can occasionally offer small pieces of shrimp, insects, or other meaty foods to enrich their diet.

Tankmates:

Calvus Cichlids are best kept with other peaceful, non-aggressive species. Suitable tankmates include:

  • Other Lake Tanganyika Cichlids: Species like the Julian's Cichlid or the other smaller cichlids from the same region are ideal companions.
  • Non-Aggressive Fish: Tetras, Rasboras, and other peaceful community fish work well with Calvus Cichlids.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Peaceful catfish like Corydoras or Synodontis can be kept with Calvus Cichlids.

Avoid housing them with larger, more aggressive species that may bully the Calvus Cichlid or outcompete it for food.

Breeding:

Breeding Calvus Cichlids in the aquarium can be challenging but is possible under the right conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with plenty of hiding spaces is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C or 79°F) and slightly alkaline.
  • Spawning Behavior: The male will court the female and lead her to a secluded spot, where the eggs will be laid. The female will usually guard the eggs while the male keeps watch over the territory.
  • Fry Care: Once the eggs hatch, the fry can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp until they are large enough to eat pellets.

Special Considerations:

  • Territorial Nature: While Calvus Cichlids are generally peaceful, they can be territorial, especially when breeding. It's important to provide plenty of hiding spaces to reduce stress and allow the fish to establish their territories.
  • Water Quality: Regular water changes and monitoring water parameters are essential to keeping Calvus Cichlids healthy and stress-free.
