Overview:

Aponogeton madagascariensis, commonly known as the Madagascar Lace Plant, is one of the most iconic and visually striking aquarium plants available. It is renowned for its delicate, net-like leaves with natural perforations, creating a lace or mesh appearance unlike any other aquatic plant.

Its dramatic foliage makes it a true statement piece and focal point in planted aquariums. Due to its size and distinctive form, it is best suited to medium to large tanks where it has space to fully develop without shading smaller plants.

Care and Growth:

This plant prefers cooler, well-oxygenated water compared to many tropical plants and grows best under medium lighting. A nutrient-rich substrate and regular root tabs are essential, as it is a heavy root feeder. CO₂ injection can improve growth but is not required.

Aponogeton madagascariensis naturally goes through dormant periods where leaves may die back completely. This is normal—reduce lighting and fertilisation during dormancy, and new leaves will emerge once the plant resumes growth. Propagation occurs via bulb division.
