White Fin Ornatus Tetra

The White Fin Ornatus Tetra (*Hyphessobrycon ornatus*) is a beautiful freshwater fish known for its striking appearance and peaceful nature. This species is highly prized in the aquarium hobby for its elegant body and contrasting white fins, which make it an attractive addition to community tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: White Fin Ornatus Tetras typically grow to about 4-5 cm (1.6-2 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: They are characterised by a shimmering silver body, with vibrant red markings near the tail and a distinctive white edge along their fins, particularly the dorsal and caudal fins.
  • Fins: Their fins are relatively long and pointed, with the tail fin exhibiting the most dramatic white edge, adding to their beauty.
  • Shape: The body is slender and streamlined, allowing them to swim gracefully through the water.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: White Fin Ornatus Tetras are peaceful and social fish that do well in schools. They are non-aggressive and can coexist with a variety of peaceful tankmates.
  • Activity Level: These fish are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, often schooling together in open water or swimming among plants.
  • Community Behavior: They thrive in schools of 5-6 individuals or more, and are best kept in a community tank with other peaceful species. Providing plenty of hiding spots will reduce stress and territorial behaviour.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of White Fin Ornatus Tetras. A larger tank is preferable for more stable water conditions.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: White Fin Ornatus Tetras thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-12 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is ideal. White Fin Ornatus Tetras enjoy a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots. Plants like Java Fern, Anubias, and Amazon Sword, as well as driftwood and rocks, create a natural habitat and help reduce stress.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to highlight their beautiful colours without causing stress. Floating plants can help create shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is preferred. Strong currents should be avoided, as they can stress the fish. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are important to maintain a clean, healthy environment.

Diet:

White Fin Ornatus Tetras are omnivores and require a balanced diet to thrive. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality tropical fish pellets or flakes should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables such as spinach or zucchini helps ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

White Fin Ornatus Tetras are peaceful and can be housed with a variety of non-aggressive tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras, Rummy Nose Tetras, or Cardinal Tetras.
  • Small Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras or Celestial Pearl Danios.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Peaceful catfish like Corydoras or Otocinclus can also be good companions.

Breeding:

Breeding White Fin Ornatus Tetras in an aquarium is possible under the right conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with a gentle filter and shallow water (about 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches) is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5).
  • Spawning Behavior: The male will court the female and guide her to a plant where she will lay her eggs. The male will fertilise the eggs shortly after they are laid.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, remove the parents to prevent them from eating the fry. The fry can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of White Fin Ornatus Tetras.
  • Shy Nature: These fish can be shy, particularly in brightly lit tanks. Providing plenty of hiding spots can help them feel more secure.
