The Blue Acara

The Blue Acara (*Andinoacara pulcher*) is a popular freshwater cichlid native to South America, particularly found in the waters of the Amazon River basin. Known for its stunning blue coloration and peaceful nature, this species is a favorite among aquarists looking for a vibrant and engaging addition to their community tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Blue Acaras typically grow to about 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) in length.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: They are characterized by a bright blue body with iridescent scales that shimmer in light, sometimes displaying green and yellow undertones.
    • Fins: Their fins are usually transparent with hints of blue and can have a striking appearance when fully extended.
  • Shape: Blue Acaras have a robust, slightly elongated body shape typical of cichlids.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Blue Acaras are generally peaceful and can be kept in community tanks with other non-aggressive species. However, they can display territorial behavior, especially during breeding.
  • Activity Level: They are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, often darting between plants and decorations.
  • Community Behavior: While they are not aggressive, care should be taken to provide sufficient space and hiding spots to reduce stress and potential conflicts with tankmates.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 100 liters (26 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Blue Acaras to ensure they have ample swimming space.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Blue Acaras thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-15 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is recommended. Blue Acaras appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, using decorations such as rocks, driftwood, and live plants to create a secure environment.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best for highlighting their vibrant colors while not overwhelming them.
    • Filtration: A strong filtration system is recommended to maintain excellent water quality, but ensure that the current is not too strong, as Blue Acaras prefer calmer waters.

Diet:

  • Blue Acaras are omnivorous and require a varied diet to maintain their health and vibrant coloration. Their diet should include:
    • Pellets: High-quality cichlid pellets should form the staple of their diet.
    • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
    • Vegetable Matter: Include some plant-based foods, such as spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables, to ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

  • Blue Acaras can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates, including:
    • Other Cichlids: Non-aggressive cichlids that are similar in size.
    • Medium to Large Fish: Such as Rainbowfish or Tetras.
    • Bottom Dwellers: Corydoras catfish or Plecos, which help maintain the tank's cleanliness.
  • Avoid housing Blue Acaras with aggressive fish or those that may nip at their fins.
