Assorted Swordtails

The Assorted Swordtails (*Xiphophorus hellerii*) are vibrant freshwater fish that are popular among aquarists for their striking appearance and friendly nature. Known for their unique tail shape, which resembles a sword, these livebearers are ideal for community tanks and add a lively splash of colour to any aquarium.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Assorted Swordtails typically grow to about 10-12 cm (4-5 inches) in length.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: They come in a variety of colours, including red, green, yellow, and black, often featuring patterns and markings that can vary greatly among individual fish.
    • Fins: The most distinctive feature is their elongated caudal fin, which gives them their 'swordtail' name. Males typically have longer swords than females.
    • Shape: Swordtails have a streamlined body shape that aids in their active swimming style.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Assorted Swordtails are generally peaceful and sociable fish, making them suitable for community tanks. They can sometimes exhibit territorial behaviour, especially males competing for female attention.
  • Activity Level: They are active swimmers, often seen exploring their environment and interacting with tankmates.
  • Community Behaviour: Swordtails thrive in groups and can coexist peacefully with a variety of other non-aggressive species.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Assorted Swordtails.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Swordtails thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly alkaline water, with a pH range of 7.0 to 8.0.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 10-28 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended. Assorted Swordtails appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, including live plants and decorations like rocks or driftwood.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best for highlighting their vibrant colours and promoting plant growth.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended to maintain water quality. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are important for their health.

Diet:

Assorted Swordtails are omnivorous and require a balanced diet:

  • Flakes: High-quality flake food should form the staple of their diet.
  • Pellets: Sinking pellets specifically formulated for omnivorous fish can also be offered.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: They benefit from occasional feedings of blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini.

Breeding:

Breeding Assorted Swordtails is relatively easy:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with plenty of plants for cover is ideal. The water should be warm (around 24°C to 26°C or 75°F to 79°F) and slightly alkaline (pH 7.0-8.0).
  • Spawning Behaviour: The female will carry the fertilised eggs internally until they hatch. After a gestation period of about 4-6 weeks, she will give birth to live fry.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed infusoria or finely crushed flake food.

Special Considerations:

  • Social Fish: Assorted Swordtails thrive in groups, so it’s best to keep them in schools of at least three or more.
  • Water Quality: Maintaining good water quality is crucial for their health, so regular testing and changes are important.
