The Turquoise Danio, also known as the Blue Danio or Pearl Danio, is a slender-bodied, active, schooling fish ideal for the community aquarium.

Native to streams and pools, the Turquoise Danio does well with other Danio species and other peaceful fish of similar size. Kept with others in a school, this fish will be very active.

The Turquoise Danio prefers a planted aquarium with plenty of swimming space available. Turquoise Danio scatter their eggs in shallow water over a substrate of coarse gravel.

After hatching, usually within 36 hours after spawning, the fry should be fed fine pieces of live foods. Sunlight may trigger spawning.

Turquoise Danios are omnivores and should be fed a diet of flake foods with plenty of vegetable matter, as well as freeze-dried bloodworms and tubifex.

Turquoise Danio Small

The Turquoise Danio (*Danio margaritatus*) is a small and vibrant freshwater fish that is popular among aquarists for its striking coloration and hardy nature. This species is particularly appreciated for its bright turquoise body adorned with shimmering spots, making it an attractive addition to community tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Turquoise Danios typically grow to about 3-4 cm (1.2-1.6 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: They are characterised by their stunning turquoise bodies, which are often highlighted by bright yellow or gold spots along their sides.
  • Fins: Their fins are relatively short but well-defined, contributing to their agile swimming style.
  • Shape: The body is elongated and laterally compressed, a common trait among danios.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Turquoise Danios are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of tankmates. They are social fish that prefer to be in groups, making them ideal for community aquariums.
  • Activity Level: These fish are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment. They often exhibit schooling behaviour, which enhances their beauty in a tank.
  • Community Behaviour: Turquoise Danios can be housed in community tanks, but care should be taken to select peaceful tankmates. Providing plenty of hiding spots will help reduce stress and territorial behaviour.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Turquoise Danios, though larger tanks are preferable for more stable water conditions.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Turquoise Danios thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-10 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended. Turquoise Danios enjoy a well-planted tank with plenty of open swimming areas, as well as some hiding spots created by rocks or driftwood.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal, as floating plants can help diffuse the light and create shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended to maintain water quality, as strong currents can stress danios. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential for a healthy environment.

Diet:

Turquoise Danios are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality flake or pellet food formulated for small tropical fish should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables, such as spinach or zucchini, can help ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

Turquoise Danios can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras.
  • Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Corydoras catfish or other non-aggressive bottom-dwellers.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species, as this can lead to stress or injury.

Breeding:

Breeding Turquoise Danios can be rewarding and relatively straightforward under the right conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water (about 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches) is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5).
  • Spawning Behaviour: The male will court the female, and after spawning, the eggs will be scattered among the plants. The parents should be removed after spawning, as they are non-guarding spawners.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Turquoise Danios.
  • Shy Nature: These fish can be shy, particularly in brightly lit tanks. Providing plenty of hiding spots can help them feel more secure.
