Silver Dollar

The Silver Dollar (*Metynnis spp.*) is a popular freshwater fish known for its distinctive disc-shaped body and shimmering silver coloration. These fish are social and active swimmers, making them an attractive choice for community aquariums.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Silver Dollars can grow to about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) in length, depending on the species.
  • Coloration: They are characterised by their bright silver bodies that can reflect light beautifully, creating a stunning display in the aquarium.
  • Fins: Their fins are relatively short, which contributes to their streamlined appearance, making them agile swimmers.
  • Shape: The body is oval and laterally compressed, typical of fish from the Characidae family.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Silver Dollars are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of tankmates. They are best kept in schools of at least five to ensure they feel secure.
  • Activity Level: These fish are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, often seen swimming in the middle to upper levels of the tank.
  • Community Behaviour: Silver Dollars can be housed in community tanks but should be kept away from aggressive or fin-nipping species.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (40 gallons) is recommended for a small school of Silver Dollars to provide ample swimming space.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Silver Dollars thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-12 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended. Silver Dollars appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of open swimming areas and some hiding spots provided by driftwood or rocks.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable, as floating plants can help diffuse the light and provide shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A good filtration system is essential, as Silver Dollars can be sensitive to poor water quality. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are necessary for maintaining a healthy environment.

Diet:

Silver Dollars are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality pellets designed for carnivorous fish should form the staple of their diet.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables, such as spinach or zucchini, is important for their dietary balance.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.

Tankmates:

Silver Dollars can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Other Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras.
  • Rasboras: Peaceful species like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Corydoras catfish or other non-aggressive bottom-dwellers.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species, as this can lead to stress or injury.

Breeding:

Breeding Silver Dollars in an aquarium can be challenging, as they require specific conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water (about 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches) is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5).
  • Spawning Behaviour: The male will court the female, and after spawning, the eggs will be scattered among the plants. They are non-guarding spawners, so the parents should be removed after spawning.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Silver Dollars.
  • Shy Nature: These fish can be shy, especially in brightly lit tanks. Providing plenty of hiding spots can help them feel more secure.
