Axelrodi Rainbowfish
The Axelrodi Rainbowfish (*Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi*), also known as the Lake Tebera Rainbowfish, is a vibrant freshwater species native to the Tebera Lake basin in Papua New Guinea. This species is highly regarded in the aquarium hobby for its striking coloration and peaceful nature, making it a popular choice among enthusiasts.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: Axelrodi Rainbowfish typically grow to about 10 cm (4 inches) in length.
- Coloration: Males exhibit bright yellow bodies with a black to bluish-black lateral line running from just before the eye to the base of the caudal fin. Their dorsal, anal, and caudal fins can be either red or yellow. Females are generally less vibrant in color.
- Fins: The fins are well-developed, with males displaying more pronounced coloration and fin size compared to females.
- Shape: They have a streamlined, elongated body shape, characteristic of many rainbowfish species.
Behavior:
- Temperament: Axelrodi Rainbowfish are peaceful and social, often found schooling in their natural habitat. They are compatible with other similarly sized, non-aggressive species.
- Activity Level: They are active swimmers, enjoying open spaces in the aquarium to move freely.
- Community Behavior: These fish thrive in groups and are best kept in schools of at least six individuals to promote natural behavior and coloration.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 55 gallons (approximately 208 liters) is recommended to accommodate a school of Axelrodi Rainbowfish and provide ample swimming space.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 20°C to 26°C (68°F to 79°F)
- pH: 7.5 to 8.0
- Hardness: 10 to 15 dGH
- Tank Setup:
- Substrate and Decorations: A sandy or fine gravel substrate is ideal. The tank should be densely planted with fine-leaved plants, providing hiding spots and mimicking their natural environment. Adding rocks and driftwood can enhance the aesthetic appeal.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable, with floating plants to diffuse light and provide shaded areas.
- Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended to maintain water quality without creating strong currents.
Diet:
Axelrodi Rainbowfish are omnivorous and require a varied diet to maintain their health and vibrant coloration. Their diet should include:
- Pellets: High-quality tropical fish pellets as a staple food.
- Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
- Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables, such as spinach or zucchini, can help ensure a balanced diet.
Tankmates:
Axelrodi Rainbowfish are compatible with various peaceful tankmates, including:
- Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras.
- Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
- Bottom-Dwellers: Corydoras catfish or other peaceful bottom-dwellers.
Avoid housing them with aggressive species or fin-nippers, as this can lead to stress or injury.
Breeding:
Breeding Axelrodi Rainbowfish can be rewarding and relatively straightforward under the right conditions:
- Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water (about 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches) is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5).
- Spawning Behavior: The male will court the female and guide her to the spawning site. After spawning, the parents should be removed to prevent them from eating the eggs.
- Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.
Special Considerations:
- Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Axelrodi Rainbowfish.
- Jumping Behavior: These fish are known to be skittish and may jump out of the aquarium. Providing a secure lid or cover is recommended to prevent this behavior.
