Zebra Cichlid
The Zebra Cichlid (*Maylandia zebra*), also known as the Zebra Mbuna, is a popular species native to Lake Malawi in Africa. Renowned for its striking appearance and engaging behaviour, this cichlid is a favourite among aquarists looking to add colour and personality to their tanks.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: Zebra Cichlids typically grow to about 10-12 cm (4-5 inches) in length.
- Coloration:
- Body: They are characterised by their bright blue or yellow bodies with distinct black stripes, resembling a zebra pattern. The intensity of the colours can vary among individuals.
- Fins: Their fins are often transparent with hints of blue or yellow, complementing the body coloration.
- Shape: Zebra Cichlids have a streamlined body, which is typical of many cichlid species.
Behaviour:
- Temperament: Zebra Cichlids are territorial and can be aggressive, especially during breeding. Males may display dominance over each other and can be aggressive towards other species with similar body shapes.
- Activity Level: They are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, often interacting with tankmates and decorations.
- Community Behaviour: While they can be aggressive, Zebra Cichlids can be kept in a community tank with compatible species, provided there is enough space to establish territories.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 190 litres (50 gallons) is recommended to accommodate a small group of Zebra Cichlids, allowing for ample swimming space and territories.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: They thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
- pH: Zebra Cichlids prefer slightly alkaline water, with a pH range of 7.5 to 8.5.
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 10-15 dGH, is ideal.
- Tank Setup:
- Substrate and Decorations: A rocky substrate is recommended, as Zebra Cichlids enjoy hiding and exploring among rocks and caves. Include live plants and decorations to create a more natural habitat.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable, as it enhances their vibrant colours without overwhelming them.
- Filtration: A strong filtration system is important for maintaining water quality. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential to keep the environment healthy.
Diet:
Zebra Cichlids are omnivorous and require a balanced diet:
- Pellets: High-quality cichlid pellets should form the staple of their diet.
- Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
- Occasional Treats: Blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach can be offered occasionally to supplement their diet.
Breeding:
Breeding Zebra Cichlids can be a rewarding experience:
- Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with ample hiding spots is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly alkaline.
- Spawning Behaviour: Males will display to attract females, often performing elaborate courtship displays. After spawning, the female will lay eggs on flat surfaces, which the male will fertilise.
- Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp. Monitor their growth closely to ensure they thrive.
Special Considerations:
- Social Structure: Zebra Cichlids are social fish that benefit from being kept in groups. However, ensure the tank is spacious enough to prevent territorial disputes.
- Water Quality: Maintaining excellent water quality is crucial for their health. Regular monitoring and maintenance are necessary to keep them healthy.
