Sparkling Gourami

The Sparkling Gourami (*Trichopsis pumila*) is a small and charming freshwater fish known for its vibrant colours and unique behaviour. This species is popular among aquarists due to its peaceful nature and the striking iridescence of its scales, making it a delightful addition to community tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Sparkling Gouramis typically grow to about 4-5 cm (1.5-2 inches) in length, making them one of the smaller gourami species.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: They are characterised by their shimmering blue-green or turquoise bodies, adorned with small spots that can appear golden or yellow under certain lighting.
    • Fins: Their fins are relatively short and delicate, often displaying a translucent quality with hints of colour that complement their bodies.
  • Shape: Sparkling Gouramis have a rounded, laterally compressed body that contributes to their graceful swimming style.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Sparkling Gouramis are generally peaceful and can coexist well with a variety of tankmates. They are social fish and are often best kept in small groups.
  • Activity Level: They are relatively active swimmers but enjoy exploring their environment at a leisurely pace. They may spend time near the surface, where they can breathe atmospheric air.
  • Community Behaviour: While they are non-aggressive, Sparkling Gouramis can show some territorial behaviour during breeding. However, they typically do well in community tanks with peaceful species.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Sparkling Gouramis, as they prefer to swim in open areas.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Sparkling Gouramis thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-8 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended, along with plenty of hiding spots created by live plants and decorations. Plants like Java moss, Anubias, and floating plants can provide shelter and reduce stress.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best, as it highlights their colours without overwhelming them. Floating plants can also help diffuse the light and create shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is preferred, as strong currents can stress the fish. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential for maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Diet:

Sparkling Gouramis are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality small pellets designed for tropical fish should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: They can also benefit from blanched vegetables, such as spinach or zucchini, as part of their diet.

Feed them 2-3 times daily, providing only as much food as they can consume in a few minutes to avoid overfeeding and maintain water quality.

Tankmates:

Sparkling Gouramis can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small, peaceful fish: Such as Tetras, Rasboras, or other small community fish.
  • Bottom-dwellers: Corydoras catfish or similar species that occupy the lower regions of the tank.
  • Shrimp: Peaceful invertebrates like Amano shrimp or Cherry shrimp can coexist well with Sparkling Gouramis.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or larger fish that may bully them, as this can lead to stress or injury.
