Product Overview

JBL BioNitratEX is a biological filter material designed to remove algae-promoting nitrate from freshwater and marine aquariums. The bio balls provide a surface for beneficial bacteria to colonise and biologically break down nitrate over time.

Once placed in an internal or external filter, bacteria form a thick biofilm on the bio balls. Beneath this layer, oxygen levels drop, enabling bacteria to extract oxygen from nitrate and degrade it. The bio balls also contain acid-binding minerals to help stabilise water parameters during the degradation process.
