Electric Blue Acara

The Electric Blue Acara (*Andinoacara pulcher*) is a stunning freshwater cichlid that is known for its vibrant, electric blue coloration. This species is a popular choice for aquarium enthusiasts due to its striking appearance and relatively peaceful nature, making it a wonderful addition to both species-specific and community tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Electric Blue Acaras typically grow to about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: The Electric Blue Acara is known for its vivid, bright blue body, which is contrasted by darker markings around the gills and fins. These colours are particularly prominent when the fish is in good health and well-maintained conditions.
  • Fins: The fins of the Electric Blue Acara are long and flowing, with the dorsal and anal fins being particularly prominent. Their fins add to the overall beauty of the species, complementing their blue body.
  • Shape: They have a sleek, streamlined body that is characteristic of cichlids, with a slightly rounded belly and a tapered tail.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: The Electric Blue Acara is generally peaceful for a cichlid but can be territorial, especially during breeding. They can coexist with other non-aggressive species, but care should be taken when selecting tankmates.
  • Activity Level: These fish are moderately active, swimming calmly around their environment. They are not overly aggressive but will assert their territory when needed.
  • Community Behavior: While generally peaceful, Electric Blue Acaras may become territorial during breeding seasons or if kept in too small a space. It is important to provide plenty of hiding spots for other fish to reduce stress and territorial behaviour.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 120 liters (30 gallons) is recommended for a single Electric Blue Acara. Larger tanks are preferable to allow them more space for swimming and to reduce territorial issues.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Electric Blue Acaras thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-12 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate such as sand or fine gravel is ideal for Electric Blue Acaras. Provide plenty of hiding spots with rocks, caves, and plants to mimic their natural environment and reduce stress.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting works best for showcasing their vibrant colours. A balance of light and shaded areas will help them feel secure and thrive.
    • Filtration: A good filtration system is necessary to maintain water quality, as Electric Blue Acaras prefer clean water. Regular water changes (about 20-30% weekly) are essential to maintain a healthy environment.

Diet:

Electric Blue Acaras are omnivorous and require a balanced diet to maintain their health and vibrant colours. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes designed for omnivores should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables like spinach, peas, or zucchini will provide the necessary fibre and help keep their digestive system healthy.

Tankmates:

Electric Blue Acaras can be housed with other peaceful species that are not too small or territorial. Suitable tankmates include:

  • Peaceful Cichlids: Non-aggressive cichlid species such as Geophagus or other Central American cichlids.
  • Catfish: Peaceful bottom dwellers like Corydoras or Synodontis species can make excellent tankmates.
  • Other Peaceful Species: Tetras, Rasboras, and peaceful barbs can also coexist with Electric Blue Acaras.

Avoid housing them with aggressive or fin-nipping species, as this can cause stress and injuries.

Breeding:

Breeding Electric Blue Acaras in a home aquarium is possible under the right conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0-7.0) is recommended. The water temperature should be kept between 26°C and 28°C (79°F-82°F).
  • Spawning Behavior: The female will lay her eggs on flat surfaces such as rocks or leaves, and the male will fertilise them. Both parents will guard the eggs and fry until they are free-swimming.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry become free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp until they are large enough to accept larger foods.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring of water quality is essential for maintaining the health of Electric Blue Acaras, as they are sensitive to poor water conditions.
  • Territorial Nature: While they are peaceful, Electric Blue Acaras can become territorial during breeding or in smaller tanks. Providing plenty of space and hiding spots will help reduce conflicts.
