Surinamen Geophagus

The Surinamen Geophagus (*Geophagus surinamensis*) is a striking freshwater cichlid species native to the waters of South America, particularly found in the Suriname River and its tributaries. Known for their unique behaviour and captivating appearance, these fish are popular among aquarists who appreciate their personality and vibrant colours.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Surinamen Geophagus typically grow to about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) in length.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: The body is generally elongated and features a mix of colours, including shades of blue, green, and yellow. They often have a metallic sheen that can appear iridescent under proper lighting.
    • Fins: Their fins are usually semi-elongated, with subtle patterns that complement their overall body coloration.
    • Shape: The Surinamen Geophagus has a streamlined body shape, which aids in their swimming agility.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Surinamen Geophagus are generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive fish. However, they can become territorial during breeding.
  • Activity Level: These fish are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, often foraging in the substrate for food.
  • Community Behaviour: They are suitable for community tanks, provided tankmates are compatible in temperament and size.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (40 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Surinamen Geophagus.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: They thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-12 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft sandy substrate is recommended, as these fish enjoy sifting through the substrate. Providing plenty of hiding spots with rocks and plants will help reduce stress.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable for their habitat. Floating plants can provide shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A good filtration system is essential for maintaining water quality. Regular water changes (about 20-30% weekly) are also crucial.

Diet:

Surinamen Geophagus are omnivorous and require a varied diet:

  • Pellets: High-quality cichlid pellets should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetation: They also benefit from plant matter, such as spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables.

Tankmates:

Surinamen Geophagus can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates:

  • Other Cichlids: Non-aggressive cichlid species that share similar water parameters.
  • Small Fish: Peaceful community fish such as Tetras and Rasboras.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Species like Corydoras or loaches that can coexist without conflict.

Breeding:

Breeding Surinamen Geophagus can be rewarding:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with a flat surface for laying eggs is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic.
  • Spawning Behaviour: They are substrate spawners, and both parents will guard the eggs and fry.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Maintaining clean water is crucial for the health of Surinamen Geophagus. Regular water changes and monitoring parameters are essential.
  • Aggression During Breeding: Be cautious, as they can become territorial when breeding. Ensure adequate space and hiding spots are available.
