Clown Knife Fish

The Clown Knife Fish (*Chitala ornata*), also known as the Clown Featherback, is a large, predatory freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia. This species is famous for its unique appearance, with a long, slender body and a striking, large, arched dorsal fin that resembles a "feather." The Clown Knife Fish is a popular aquarium fish, especially for those who have large tanks and are experienced in caring for large, carnivorous species.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Clown Knife Fish can grow up to 90 cm (35 inches) in the wild, though they typically reach about 60 cm (24 inches) in aquariums.
  • Coloration: They have a distinctive, pale, silvery body with a black band that runs along the length of their body, giving them the "clown" appearance. This band is more pronounced in juveniles and may fade as the fish matures.
  • Fins: Their dorsal fin is long and highly distinctive, extending down the length of the body, and their tail fin has a unique shape with a "V" pattern, contributing to their graceful swimming style.
  • Shape: The Clown Knife Fish has an elongated, flattened body that helps them navigate through dense aquatic vegetation. Their mouth is large and designed for catching prey, which can include smaller fish and invertebrates.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Clown Knife Fish are generally peaceful but can be territorial and aggressive towards smaller fish, particularly in smaller tanks. They are predatory in nature and will consume any fish that fits in their mouth.
  • Activity Level: These fish are relatively active, spending a lot of time exploring their environment, especially at night when they are most active.
  • Community Behavior: Clown Knife Fish are best kept with larger, more robust fish that can handle their predatory nature. Smaller, slower-moving fish are at risk of being eaten.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: Due to their large size, Clown Knife Fish require a minimum tank size of 200 liters (50 gallons), though larger tanks are preferable to provide enough space for them to swim comfortably.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Clown Knife Fish thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral water is preferred, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-12 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: Clown Knife Fish prefer a soft substrate, such as sand, and enjoy a well-planted tank with hiding spots, driftwood, and rocks to mimic their natural environment.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable, as Clown Knife Fish are nocturnal and may prefer dimmer conditions during the day.
    • Filtration: A strong filtration system is necessary to maintain water quality, as Clown Knife Fish produce a significant amount of waste. Regular water changes (about 25% weekly) are also important.

Diet:

Clown Knife Fish are carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet to thrive. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality carnivorous pellets or sinking pellets are suitable as part of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as feeder fish, bloodworms, shrimp, and earthworms. These will help mimic their natural diet and enhance their colouration.
  • Occasional Treats: Provide live or frozen invertebrates, such as brine shrimp or daphnia, as treats to maintain variety in their diet.

Tankmates:

Clown Knife Fish can be housed with other large, peaceful fish, such as:

  • Larger Cichlids: Species such as Oscar Fish or African Cichlids can be compatible with Clown Knife Fish, as long as they are not small enough to be eaten.
  • Larger Catfish: Catfish species, like the Plecos or other large species, may cohabit well with Clown Knife Fish.
  • Other Large Species: As long as the other fish are not too small or slow, they can coexist with Clown Knife Fish in a community tank.

Avoid small fish or those that are slower and more vulnerable to predation.

Breeding:

Breeding Clown Knife Fish in captivity is challenging, as they are not known to breed in aquarium conditions. However, there are some tips for potential breeding setups:

  • Breeding Setup: A large, well-maintained aquarium with plenty of space for swimming and adequate hiding spots is required. The water should be warm (around 28°C or 82°F) and slightly acidic.
  • Spawning Behavior: In the wild, Clown Knife Fish spawn in large schools. They may require specific environmental triggers, such as water changes and changes in water temperature, to trigger breeding behavior.
  • Fry Care: The fry, when hatched, will require microscopic food such as infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp until they grow large enough to consume regular food.

Special Considerations:

  • Space Requirements: As Clown Knife Fish grow large, they need a significantly spacious tank to thrive. Ensure the tank is large enough to accommodate their size and swimming needs.
  • Predatory Nature: Always consider their predatory nature when selecting tankmates. Small fish should not be housed with Clown Knife Fish, as they may be seen as food.
