Silver Tip Tetra

The Silver Tip Tetra (*Hasemania nana*) is a small and vibrant freshwater fish that is popular among aquarists for its attractive appearance and lively behaviour. This species is characterised by its silvery body and distinctive black tips on its fins, making it a striking addition to community tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Silver Tip Tetras typically grow to about 4-5 cm (1.6-2 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: They have a bright silvery body that reflects light beautifully, with prominent black tips on their dorsal and anal fins that add to their appeal.
  • Fins: Their fins are relatively short but well-defined, contributing to their graceful swimming style.
  • Shape: The body is slender and laterally compressed, which is typical of many tetras.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Silver Tip Tetras are generally peaceful and can coexist well with a variety of tankmates. They are social fish that prefer to be in groups, making them ideal for community aquariums.
  • Activity Level: These fish are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment. They often exhibit schooling behaviour, which enhances their beauty in a tank.
  • Community Behaviour: Silver Tip Tetras can be housed in community tanks, but care should be taken to select peaceful tankmates. They thrive in schools of at least six individuals.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 60 litres (15 gallons) is recommended for a small school of Silver Tip Tetras to provide ample swimming space.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Silver Tip Tetras thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-10 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended. Silver Tip Tetras enjoy a well-planted tank with plenty of open swimming areas, as well as some hiding spots created by rocks or driftwood.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal, as floating plants can help diffuse the light and create shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended to maintain water quality, as strong currents can stress tetras. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential for a healthy environment.

Diet:

Silver Tip Tetras are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality flake or pellet food formulated for small tropical fish should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables, such as spinach or zucchini, can help ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

Silver Tip Tetras can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras.
  • Rasboras: Peaceful species like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Corydoras catfish or other non-aggressive bottom-dwellers.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species, as this can lead to stress or injury.

Breeding:

Breeding Silver Tip Tetras can be rewarding under the right conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water (about 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches) is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5).
  • Spawning Behaviour: The male will court the female, and after spawning, the eggs will be scattered among the plants. The parents should be removed after spawning, as they are non-guarding spawners.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Silver Tip Tetras.
  • Shy Nature: These fish can be shy, particularly in brightly lit tanks. Providing plenty of hiding spots can help them feel more secure.
