  • Model: -

The Koi Betta is a stunning and unique variant of Betta splendens that has been selectively bred to resemble the colors and patterns of koi fish. Female Koi Bettas are known for their beautiful marble patterns, which often feature combinations of red, orange, black, white, and yellow, creating a striking resemblance to the traditional Japanese koi. While they share the vibrant color patterns of their male counterparts, females have shorter fins and a more compact body, making them just as attractive but more streamlined in appearance.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Female Koi Bettas typically grow to about 5-6 cm (2-2.4 inches) in length, slightly smaller and stockier than the males.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: The defining characteristic of Koi Bettas is their marble or "koi-like" color patterns. Female Koi Bettas exhibit a blend of colors such as red, black, white, orange, yellow, and sometimes blue. The marble gene gives their coloration a dynamic quality, which means their patterns can change over time.
    • Fins: Female Koi Bettas have shorter, more streamlined fins compared to males. However, their fins still display vibrant colors that complement their body patterns. Their dorsal, caudal (tail), and anal fins may also have some iridescent spots or accents.
    • Shape: Female Koi Bettas have a more compact body and shorter fins, giving them a sleeker and more agile look compared to long-finned male bettas.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Female Koi Bettas are generally less aggressive than males, making them more suitable for community tanks or even sororities (groups of female bettas). However, they can still be territorial and may occasionally display aggression toward other fish, especially if there isn’t enough space or hiding spots in the tank.
  • Activity Level: Koi Betta females are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment. They tend to be more social than males and can be seen interacting with other peaceful tankmates.
  • Community Behavior: While generally more peaceful, female Koi Bettas can display territorial behavior, especially toward other female bettas. In well-managed sorority tanks with plenty of space and hiding spots, they can coexist with other females. However, they may still show some dominance or aggression, particularly in smaller tanks or overcrowded setups.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 10 liters (2.5 gallons) is recommended for a single female Koi Betta. However, if housing multiple females in a sorority, a larger tank of at least 40-60 liters (10-15 gallons) is ideal to reduce aggression and provide sufficient space. A community tank should be at least 40 liters (10 gallons).
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Female Koi Bettas thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-8 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is recommended. Female Koi Bettas enjoy a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots to explore and retreat when needed. Live plants like Java fern, Anubias, and floating plants such as frogbit provide cover and create a natural habitat that reduces stress.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal for showcasing their vibrant colors while preventing stress. Floating plants can help diffuse light and create shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as Koi Bettas prefer calm water without strong currents. A sponge filter or low-flow filter is ideal for maintaining water quality. Regular water changes (20% weekly) are necessary to ensure clean water and prevent diseases.

Diet:

Koi Betta females are carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet to maintain their health and vibrant colors. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality betta-specific pellets or micro-pellets should form the staple of their diet, as they are formulated to meet their nutritional needs.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety. These foods help enhance their colors and keep them healthy.
  • Occasional Treats: Freeze-dried bloodworms or tubifex worms can be offered occasionally but should not be the primary diet, as they can cause bloating if overfed.

Tankmates:

Female Koi Bettas can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates, provided they are not too small or prone to fin-nipping. Suitable tankmates include:

  • Small, peaceful fish: Such as Neon Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras, or Ember Tetras.
  • Bottom-dwellers: Corydoras catfish or Kuhli loaches, which tend to stay at the bottom of the tank and avoid interaction with the betta.
  • Shrimp or snails: Peaceful invertebrates like Amano shrimp, Cherry shrimp, or Nerite snails can coexist well with bettas and help keep the tank clean.

Avoid housing female Koi Bettas with aggressive fish, fin-nipping species like Tiger Barbs, or larger, territorial species.

Sorority Setup:

A sorority tank is a carefully managed setup where multiple female bettas live together. For a successful sorority, it’s essential to:

  • Provide a larger tank, at least 40-60 liters (10-15 gallons) for 4-5 females.
  • Have lots of plants and decorations to break the line of sight and provide hiding spots, which reduces aggression.
  • Monitor their behavior closely, especially during the first few weeks, as females establish a hierarchy. Even in well-established sororities, occasional disputes may occur, so careful observation is necessary.

Breeding:

Breeding female Koi Bettas follows the same process as breeding other betta varieties, but it requires careful preparation and attention.

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank of around 20 liters (5 gallons) with shallow water (about 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches) is ideal. The water should be warm (26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5). Provide floating plants or a piece of Styrofoam for the male to build his bubble nest.
  • Spawning Behavior: After spawning, the male will place the eggs in the bubble nest and guard them until they hatch. Once spawning is complete, the female should be removed to prevent aggression from the male.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, the male should also be removed. The fry can be fed infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.
