Flame Gourami

The Flame Gourami (*Colisa lalia*) is a vibrant and popular freshwater fish native to the shallow waters of South and Southeast Asia, particularly in India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. This species is celebrated for its stunning coloration, peaceful temperament, and adaptability to various aquarium conditions, making it a favourite among aquarists.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Flame Gouramis typically grow to about 5-7 cm (2-3 inches) in length, making them a small to medium-sized fish.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: The body of the Flame Gourami is elongated and laterally compressed, with a striking colour palette that includes vibrant red, orange, and yellow hues.
    • Fins: Their fins are long and flowing, often displaying shades of blue or green, which create a beautiful contrast against the warm tones of their body.
  • Shape: Flame Gouramis have a distinctively rounded body shape, giving them an elegant and graceful appearance in the water.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Flame Gouramis are generally peaceful and can be kept in community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. They may display some territorial behaviour, especially during breeding.
  • Activity Level: These fish are moderately active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment. They often interact with tank mates and can be seen swimming in the mid to upper levels of the tank.
  • Community Behaviour: Flame Gouramis do well in community tanks with other peaceful fish. However, it is best to avoid housing them with aggressive species that may harass them.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Flame Gouramis, though larger tanks are ideal to provide ample swimming space.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: They thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: Flame Gouramis prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-10 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is recommended, along with plenty of live plants, floating vegetation, and hiding spots. This creates a natural habitat and reduces stress.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best, as intense lighting can stress the fish. Floating plants can help diffuse the light and provide shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is ideal, as strong currents can stress the Flame Gourami. Regular water changes (around 20% weekly) are essential to maintain good water quality.

Diet:

Flame Gouramis are omnivorous and require a varied diet to maintain their health and vibrant coloration. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality omnivore pellets or flakes should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: They enjoy live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia, which provide essential protein and nutrients.
  • Vegetable Matter: Occasional plant-based foods, such as spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables, should be offered to ensure a balanced diet.

Feed them 2-3 times daily, providing only as much food as they can consume in a few minutes to prevent overfeeding and maintain water quality.

Tankmates:

Flame Gouramis can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small, peaceful fish: Such as Neon Tetras, Rasboras, and small Danios.
  • Bottom-dwellers: Corydoras catfish or similar species that occupy the lower regions of the tank.
  • Shrimp or snails: Peaceful invertebrates like Amano shrimp or Nerite snails can coexist with Flame Gouramis.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species, as well as larger fish that may see them as prey.
