Koi are renowned for their beauty and are often featured in ornamental ponds and water gardens. They have a long history in Japanese culture, symbolising prosperity and good fortune.

Physical Characteristics:

• Size: Koi can grow significantly, typically reaching sizes between 30 cm (12 inches) to over 90 cm (36 inches), depending on the variety and environment.
• Coloration: Assorted Koi may exhibit a wide range of colours, including red, orange, yellow, white, black, and blue. The patterns can vary from solid colours to intricate markings, including Kohaku (white with red patches), Taisho Sanke (white with red and black markings), and Showa (black with red and white markings).
• Fins: Koi have long, flowing fins that contribute to their graceful swimming style. The dorsal fin is prominent and can vary in shape based on the koi variety.
• Shape: Koi have a robust, elongated body with a broad head and thick tail, designed for strong swimming and stability in water.

Behaviour:

• Temperament: Koi are generally peaceful and can coexist with other fish species in larger ponds. They are social creatures that often interact with their keepers.
• Activity Level: Koi are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, often swimming in schools or groups.
• Feeding Behaviour: They are surface feeders and can be seen eagerly accepting food from their keepers, making them enjoyable to watch during feeding times.

Aquarium Care:

• Pond Size: Koi require a large pond for optimal growth and health. A minimum of 1000 litres (265 gallons) is recommended for a few koi to thrive, with larger sizes preferred for more koi or larger varieties.
• Water Parameters:
  • Temperature: Koi thrive in a temperature range of 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), with a stable environment being ideal.
  • pH: A slightly alkaline pH of 7.0 to 8.0 is preferred.
  • Hardness: Koi prefer moderately hard water with a general hardness (GH) of 5-20 dGH.
• Pond Setup:
  • Substrate and Decorations: A natural pond bottom with gravel or sand is recommended. Adding plants can provide shade and cover, but ensure they are koi-safe.
  • Filtration: A robust filtration system is essential to maintain water quality. Regular water changes and monitoring of water parameters are crucial for koi health.
  • Oxygenation: Ensure proper aeration in the pond, especially during warmer months, to maintain oxygen levels for the koi.

• Breeding Setup: A separate breeding pond with shallow water and plenty of plants is ideal for breeding activities.
• Spawning Behaviour: Koi typically spawn in the spring when water temperatures rise. The female will lay eggs among plants, which the male will fertilise.
• Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed infusoria or finely crushed koi pellets until they are large enough to consume larger food items.
