Chili Rasbora, scientifically known as Boraras brigittae, is a popular freshwater fish among aquarium enthusiasts, especially those interested in nano or small-sized tanks. Originating from blackwater streams and peat swamps of Indonesia, particularly in Borneo, these tiny fish are known for their vibrant colour and peaceful nature.

Appearance: Chili Rasboras are small, reaching only about 0.5 to 0.7 inches (1.5 to 2 cm) in length. They are characterized by their bright red colour, which is more pronounced in males, and a dark, almost black horizontal stripe that runs from the head to the tail. This striking coloration makes them stand out, especially in a planted aquarium.

Tank Requirements: Due to their small size, Chili Rasboras do not require large aquariums. A 10-gallon tank can comfortably house a small group of these fish. They thrive in soft, acidic water with a pH between 4.0 and 7.0, and a temperature range of 20° to 26°C (68° to 79°F).

Behaviour and Compatibility: Chili Rasboras are peaceful and schooling fish. They do best in groups of at least 6, as they feel more secure and display more natural behaviours in larger numbers. They are suitable for community tanks with other small, peaceful species.

Diet: In the wild, Chili Rasboras feed on small insects, larvae, and plankton. In the aquarium, they should be fed a variety of high-quality dry foods, like micro pellets or flakes, along with small live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, or micro worms to ensure proper nutrition.

Tank Setup: These fish prefer densely planted tanks that replicate their natural habitat. Driftwood, leaf litter, and floating plants can be used to create dimmer light and provide hiding spots. Soft, dark substrate is also recommended to mimic their natural environment and highlight their colours.

Breeding: Breeding Chili Rasboras can be a bit challenging. They are egg scatterers, and the adults do not care for the eggs or fry. A separate breeding tank with similar water conditions and fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop is ideal for egg laying.

Special Considerations: Due to their small size, Chili Rasboras can be intimidated or outcompeted for food by larger fish. It's important to monitor feeding to ensure they are getting enough food and are not stressed by more boisterous tank mates.

Chili Rasboras are an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add a splash of colour to their small aquariums. Their peaceful nature and striking appearance make them a favourite in the aquascaping community and among those who appreciate the beauty of nano fish.
