The Leopard Veil Tail Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) is a stunning and selectively bred variety of angelfish known for its unique "leopard" pattern of spots and long, flowing veil-like fins. This angelfish combines the elegant body shape of traditional angelfish with distinctive leopard-like markings, giving it a highly exotic appearance. The veil tail variety is particularly admired for its elongated fins, which enhance its graceful swimming and overall visual appeal. Leopard Veil Tail Angelfish are peaceful and make a beautiful addition to community aquariums.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Leopard Veil Tail Angelfish can grow up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length and up to 20 cm (8 inches) in height, including their long fins.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: The Leopard Veil Tail is characterized by its striking leopard-like spots, which appear as dark, irregular markings over a silver or gold base color. These spots can vary in size and distribution, but they are typically spread across the body and fins.
    • Fins: The fins are long, flowing, and veil-like, adding to the angelfish's majestic appearance. The veil tail's elongated fins make it even more elegant as it glides through the water, and the fins may also display some of the leopard-like patterning.
  • Fins: The veil tail variety is known for its extra-long fins, particularly the dorsal and anal fins, which extend beyond the body. The ventral fins are long and thread-like, adding to the angelfish's graceful appearance. However, these delicate fins are prone to damage if housed with aggressive or fin-nipping fish.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Leopard Veil Tail Angelfish are generally peaceful and make excellent tankmates in community setups. However, like most angelfish, they can become mildly territorial, especially during breeding or when establishing dominance within a group.
  • Social Behavior: These angelfish are best kept in groups of 5-6 individuals when young. As they mature, pairs may form and become more territorial, particularly when preparing to breed.
  • Community-Friendly: Leopard Veil Tail Angelfish are peaceful enough to be housed in community tanks with other non-aggressive species, though they may view very small fish as prey.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 150 liters (40 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Leopard Veil Tail Angelfish. Larger tanks (200 liters or more) are ideal for providing sufficient swimming space, especially when keeping multiple fish or a community setup.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Leopard Veil Tail Angelfish thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water is best, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-8 dGH.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate with plenty of live plants such as Amazon swords, Vallisneria, or Java ferns is ideal. These plants provide cover and help mimic the angelfish's natural environment. Driftwood and rocks can be added to create hiding spots and enrich the tank's aesthetic.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting works well to enhance their unique leopard pattern without causing stress. Floating plants can help diffuse the light and create shaded areas that make the fish feel more secure.
  • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is necessary to maintain water quality without creating strong currents, as Leopard Veil Tail Angelfish prefer calm water conditions.

Diet:

Leopard Veil Tail Angelfish are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet that promotes health and enhances their coloration. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets or Flakes: High-quality angelfish flakes or pellets designed for omnivorous cichlids should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: They enjoy live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia, and blackworms. These protein-rich foods help maintain their vibrant colors and promote growth.
  • Vegetable Matter: Occasionally offer plant-based foods like spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables (such as spinach or zucchini) to ensure a balanced diet.

Feed them small portions 2-3 times daily, ensuring that they consume all food within a few minutes to avoid overfeeding and maintain water quality.

Tankmates:

Leopard Veil Tail Angelfish are peaceful and can coexist with a wide variety of other community fish, as long as their tankmates are not aggressive or fin-nippers. Suitable tankmates include:

  • Tetras: Larger species like Rummy Nose Tetras, Bleeding Heart Tetras, or Black Skirt Tetras are ideal companions.
  • Corydoras catfish: These peaceful bottom-dwellers are great tankmates that won’t compete with the angelfish for space.
  • Dwarf Gouramis: These peaceful fish are compatible with angelfish and share similar water requirements.
  • Plecos: Small, peaceful Plecos are excellent for algae control and won’t disturb the angelfish.

Avoid aggressive species or fin-nippers such as barbs, as they can damage the Leopard Veil Tail's delicate fins.

Breeding:

Breeding Leopard Veil Tail Angelfish is similar to breeding other varieties of Pterophyllum scalare and can be relatively easy in a well-maintained tank.

  • Pair Formation: Angelfish are monogamous, and breeding pairs will form naturally from a group. Once paired, they may become more territorial and protective of their chosen spawning area.
  • Breeding Tank: If breeding, move the pair to a separate breeding tank with soft, acidic water (pH around 6.0-6.5) and a temperature of around 26°C (79°F). Flat surfaces like broad-leafed plants or pieces of slate should be provided for egg-laying.
  • Spawning Behavior: The female will lay eggs on a flat surface, and the male will fertilize them. Both parents will guard the eggs and fry, fanning them to keep them clean and oxygenated.
  • Fry Care: The eggs will hatch in about 2-3 days, and the fry will become free-swimming after about a week. The fry can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp until they are large enough to eat crushed flake food.

Special Considerations:

  • Fin Care: Due to their long, flowing fins, Leopard Veil Tail Angelfish are more prone to fin damage. Housing them with peaceful tankmates and maintaining excellent water quality are key to preventing fin rot or injury.
  • Water Quality: Regular water changes and maintaining stable water conditions are essential for Leopard Veil Tail Angelfish. Poor water quality can lead to stress and health problems like fin rot or infections.
