Viator Snakehead Gudgeon

The Viator Snakehead Gudgeon (*Channa viator*) is an intriguing species of freshwater fish that belongs to the Channidae family. Known for its distinctive snakehead appearance and unique behavioural traits, this species is becoming increasingly popular among aquarists who enjoy keeping more uncommon fish. The Viator Snakehead Gudgeon is typically found in slow-moving rivers and ponds, where it thrives in a variety of environments.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Viator Snakehead Gudgeons generally grow to a length of 15-20 cm (6-8 inches), making them a medium-sized species suitable for most community tanks.
  • Coloration: The body of the Viator Snakehead Gudgeon is typically a dull brown or olive green with a mottled pattern, providing effective camouflage in its natural environment. Their scales are smooth and slightly iridescent under certain lighting.
  • Fins: The dorsal and caudal fins are elongated and slightly pointed, giving the fish a streamlined look. The pectoral fins are wide, which helps them maneuver easily in tight spaces.
  • Shape: With a long, narrow head that gives it a "snake-like" appearance, this species shares traits with other members of the snakehead family. The body is moderately compressed, adding to its agile swimming capabilities.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: The Viator Snakehead Gudgeon is generally peaceful but can show territorial behaviour, especially when it comes to food or breeding. It's best housed with other non-aggressive species.
  • Activity Level: These fish are moderately active and enjoy exploring their surroundings. They can often be found hiding in plants or rocks, but will occasionally swim through the open water in search of food.
  • Community Behaviour: While peaceful with most tankmates, they can become aggressive towards smaller, slower fish. It's recommended to house them with similarly sized or more robust species that won't provoke them.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 100 liters (26 gallons) is recommended for a single Viator Snakehead Gudgeon. A larger tank will provide more space for swimming and help maintain stable water conditions.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: They thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: The Viator Snakehead Gudgeon prefers slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water with a general hardness (GH) of 3-10 dGH is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft sandy substrate is preferred, along with plenty of hiding spots created by rocks, driftwood, and live plants. This mimics their natural environment and provides them with shelter and security.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal, with floating plants helping to diffuse the light and create shaded areas where the fish can retreat if necessary.
    • Filtration: A good filtration system is essential to maintain clean water. It’s important to avoid strong currents, as the Viator Snakehead Gudgeon prefers calm waters. A sponge filter or low-flow system is recommended.

Diet:

The Viator Snakehead Gudgeon is carnivorous and requires a protein-rich diet to stay healthy and vibrant. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality carnivorous pellets are a suitable base for their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia to provide the necessary protein and nutrients for growth and health.
  • Occasional Treats: They may also enjoy occasional treats such as chopped fish, shrimp, or earthworms.

Tankmates:

The Viator Snakehead Gudgeon is best housed with similarly sized or slightly more robust species that won’t provoke it. Suitable tankmates include:

  • Medium-Sized Tetras: Such as Rummy Nose Tetras or Serpae Tetras.
  • Other Peaceful Fish: Fish like the Gourami or peaceful cichlids can work well, as long as they aren’t too aggressive.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Fish like Corydoras catfish or Kuhli loaches can safely coexist with the Viator Snakehead Gudgeon without competition for space or food.

Avoid housing them with very small or slow-moving fish, as the Viator Snakehead Gudgeon may view them as prey.

Breeding:

Breeding the Viator Snakehead Gudgeon is possible but can be tricky, as they require specific conditions for successful spawning:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with a soft substrate and plenty of hiding places is ideal. The water should be slightly acidic (pH 6.5 to 7.0) and kept warm (26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F).
  • Spawning Behaviour: The male will display and court the female, and once they spawn, the male will guard the eggs until they hatch.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Viator Snakehead Gudgeons are sensitive to poor water quality, so regular water changes and monitoring are crucial for their health.
  • Shy Nature: These fish can be shy and may hide frequently, particularly if the tank is too bright. Providing plenty of hiding spots can help them feel secure and reduce stress.
