Leucistic Senegal Bichir

The Leucistic Senegal Bichir (*Polypterus senegalus*) is a unique and stunning variation of the common Senegal Bichir. Characterised by its pale, almost white coloration, this fish stands out due to its leucistic trait, giving it a striking appearance that makes it a favourite among aquarium enthusiasts. Despite its unusual colouration, it retains all the behaviours and characteristics of the regular Senegal Bichir.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: The Leucistic Senegal Bichir typically grows to about 30-35 cm (12-14 inches) in length, although some individuals can reach up to 40 cm (16 inches).
  • Coloration: Unlike the typical Senegal Bichir, which is usually olive green with black markings, the Leucistic Senegal Bichir has a pale, almost white body with a faint greyish or brownish pattern.
  • Fins: The fins of the Leucistic Senegal Bichir are similar to other bichirs, with a long dorsal fin and a prominent caudal fin. Their fins are usually transparent or pale, giving them an even more ethereal appearance.
  • Shape: This species has a cylindrical body with a segmented appearance, reminiscent of ancient fish species. The head is elongated, and the body is covered with thick, armour-like scales.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Leucistic Senegal Bichirs are generally peaceful fish but can be territorial, particularly when it comes to food or shelter. They are often more active at night and are relatively slow swimmers.
  • Activity Level: These fish are relatively slow-moving during the day, preferring to hide in crevices or under objects. They are more active at night when they hunt for food.
  • Community Behaviour: While they can be housed with other peaceful species, they may become territorial or predatory towards smaller fish. It's best to house them with medium to large fish that can tolerate their occasional aggression.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 200 liters (53 gallons) is recommended for a single Leucistic Senegal Bichir. Larger tanks are ideal for multiple fish to provide enough space for swimming and hiding.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: This species thrives in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 30°C (75°F to 86°F).
    • pH: Leucistic Senegal Bichirs prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-12 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is preferred, as this allows the bichir to root around without damaging its delicate belly. Provide plenty of hiding places using rocks, driftwood, and caves to make the fish feel secure.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal, with floating plants to provide shaded areas and diffuse light.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended to maintain clean water, as strong currents can stress the bichir. Regular water changes (20-30% weekly) are important to maintain water quality.

Diet:

Leucistic Senegal Bichirs are carnivorous and will require a varied diet to stay healthy. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality carnivorous pellets or sinking food designed for carnivorous fish should form the basis of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, earthworms, and small fish. These foods provide the essential protein they need for growth and health.
  • Occasional Treats: Leucistic Senegal Bichirs will also accept occasional treats such as small mollusks or chopped fish, which can add variety to their diet.

Tankmates:

The Leucistic Senegal Bichir is best kept with larger fish that won't be seen as prey. Suitable tankmates include:

  • Medium to Large Cichlids: Such as African Cichlids or New World Cichlids.
  • Larger Catfish: Catfish species such as the Pimelodus or larger species of Corydoras are compatible.
  • Other Peaceful Fish: Fish like Gouramis, Tetras, or larger Rasboras may also be suitable companions as long as they are not too small to be seen as food.

Avoid housing them with small fish or fast-moving species that may stress the bichir.

Breeding:

Breeding the Leucistic Senegal Bichir in captivity is rare and requires specific conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with a gentle current and plenty of hiding spots is necessary. The water should be warm (26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.5 to 7.0).
  • Spawning Behavior: The male will court the female and create a nest for the eggs. After spawning, the male will guard the eggs until they hatch.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry become free-swimming, they should be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Maintaining high water quality is essential for the health of the Leucistic Senegal Bichir. Regular water tests and water changes are necessary to keep conditions optimal.
  • Shy Nature: Leucistic Senegal Bichirs can be shy and may hide often. Providing plenty of caves and hiding spots will help them feel secure and reduce stress.
