Golden Black Molly Lyretail

The Golden Black Molly Lyretail (*Poecilia sphenops*) is a captivating freshwater fish popular in the aquarium hobby for its vibrant coloration and unique fin shape. This variety of molly is known for its striking golden and black patterns, combined with long, flowing lyretail fins that create an elegant appearance in any tank.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Golden Black Molly Lyretails typically grow to about 8-10 cm (3-4 inches) in length, making them a suitable size for community tanks.
  • Coloration: The body displays a beautiful golden hue with contrasting black markings, giving it a distinct and eye-catching look.
  • Fins: The lyretail fin is one of the defining features, with elongated lobes that create a flowing and graceful appearance when the fish swims.
  • Shape: The body is slightly oval and robust, typical of molly species, allowing for comfortable swimming and good health.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Golden Black Molly Lyretails are generally peaceful and social, making them excellent companions in community tanks. They may display some territorial behaviour, particularly males, but are usually non-aggressive.
  • Activity Level: These fish are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, often seen interacting with each other and their surroundings.
  • Community Behaviour: They thrive in groups and should ideally be kept in schools of 5 or more to reduce stress and promote natural behaviour.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 liters (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Golden Black Molly Lyretails, although larger tanks are preferable for stable water conditions.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: They thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: Mollies prefer slightly alkaline water, with a pH range of 7.0 to 8.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 10-20 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate with plenty of hiding spots is recommended. Live plants, driftwood, and rocks can create a more natural environment, but avoid sharp decorations that could damage their fins.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal for showcasing their colours while ensuring plants thrive.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended to maintain water quality. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential for keeping the tank clean and healthy.

Diet:

Golden Black Molly Lyretails are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality fish pellets or flakes designed for tropical fish should form the staple of their diet.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables, such as spinach or zucchini, can help ensure a balanced diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to provide essential protein and variety.

Tankmates:

Golden Black Molly Lyretails can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras.
  • Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Other Mollies: They can also coexist well with other varieties of mollies.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or fin-nippers, as this can lead to stress or injury.

Breeding:

Breeding Golden Black Molly Lyretails can be rewarding:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with plenty of hiding spots is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly alkaline (pH 7.5-8.0).
  • Spawning Behaviour: Males will court females by displaying their fins and chasing them. After spawning, the female will carry the fertilised eggs internally until they hatch.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, provide them with finely crushed flakes or specialised fry food.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Golden Black Molly Lyretails.
  • Social Nature: Keeping them in groups promotes natural behaviour and reduces stress.
