Red Parrot Cichlid

The Red Parrot Cichlid is a unique and visually striking freshwater fish that has gained popularity among aquarium enthusiasts for its vibrant colours and friendly personality. This hybrid fish is primarily derived from the Central American Cichlids, such as the Midas and Red Devil Cichlids, and is known for its distinctive shape and social behaviour.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Red Parrot Cichlids typically grow to about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) in length.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: The Red Parrot is known for its bright orange or red coloration, which can vary in intensity depending on individual genetics and environment.
    • Fins: The fins are generally the same bright colour as the body, contributing to their vibrant appearance.
    • Shape: They have a round, compressed body shape and a unique beak-like mouth, which sets them apart from other cichlid species.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Red Parrot Cichlids are generally peaceful and can be kept in community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. However, they may exhibit territorial behaviour, especially when breeding.
  • Activity Level: They are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment. They are known to be interactive with their owners and can recognise familiar faces.
  • Community Behaviour: While generally friendly, they can be assertive during feeding or when establishing territory, so careful selection of tankmates is essential.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (40 gallons) is recommended for a single Red Parrot Cichlid, with larger tanks preferred for groups or community setups.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Red Parrots thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-12 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended, along with plenty of hiding spots created by rocks, caves, and driftwood. Live plants can be included, but be prepared for them to be uprooted.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best, allowing for areas of shade and cover.
    • Filtration: A robust filtration system is essential, as Red Parrots produce a significant amount of waste. Regular water changes (about 20-30% weekly) are also important for maintaining water quality.

Diet:

Red Parrot Cichlids are omnivorous and require a balanced diet to thrive:

  • Pellets: High-quality cichlid pellets should form the staple of their diet, as these are formulated to meet their nutritional needs.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetation: They can also benefit from plant matter, such as spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables, as part of their diet.

Tankmates:

Red Parrot Cichlids can be housed with various tankmates, provided they are compatible:

  • Large Cichlids: Other non-aggressive cichlids that share similar water parameters.
  • Catfish: Species like Synodontis or larger plecos can coexist well.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Robust bottom-dwellers like larger loaches can also be suitable tankmates.

Breeding:

Breeding Red Parrot Cichlids can be rewarding:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank of about 150 litres (40 gallons) with a flat surface for laying eggs is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic.
  • Spawning Behaviour: The female will lay eggs on a flat surface, and both parents will guard the eggs and fry.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Maintaining clean water is crucial for the health of Red Parrot Cichlids. Regular water changes and monitoring parameters are essential.
  • Aggression: As Red Parrots can be territorial, it’s important to carefully select tankmates and monitor their behaviour.
