Synodontis Decorus Catfish

The Synodontis Decorus Catfish also known as Clown Squeaker, is a striking and fascinating species of freshwater catfish that is native to the Congo River basin in Central Africa. Known for its distinctive appearance and peaceful nature, this catfish is a popular choice among aquarists who appreciate its unique looks and low-maintenance care requirements.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Synodontis Decorus typically grows to about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: The body of the Synodontis Decorus is light brown to grey, with dark markings that form spots and blotches across its body, providing it with a camouflaged, patterned appearance.
  • Fins: It has long, flowing pectoral fins with a slightly serrated edge, which adds to its distinctive look. The dorsal fin is also large and triangular in shape, with dark edges.
  • Shape: The body is elongated and slightly flattened, a common trait among species of the Synodontis genus.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Synodontis Decorus is peaceful and non-aggressive, making it suitable for community tanks. However, it can be territorial and may become protective of its hiding spots.
  • Activity Level: It is relatively active, particularly at night, as Synodontis species are often nocturnal. During the day, it tends to hide in caves or among plants, coming out at night to forage.
  • Community Behavior: These fish are peaceful and can be housed with a variety of other peaceful fish, but it's best to avoid tankmates that are small enough to be considered prey.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 80 liters (20 gallons) is recommended for a single Synodontis Decorus. Larger tanks with plenty of hiding spaces are ideal to allow them to thrive.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Synodontis Decorus prefers warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-15 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is recommended, as rough substrates can damage their sensitive barbels. Providing plenty of hiding spots with caves, driftwood, and plants will mimic their natural habitat.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting works best for Synodontis Decorus, as they tend to hide in shaded areas during the day.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended to maintain water quality without disturbing the catfish's natural behavior.

Diet:

Synodontis Decorus is omnivorous and enjoys a varied diet. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets formulated for catfish should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia to provide protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Occasionally offer blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach to ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

Synodontis Decorus is peaceful and can be housed with various other species, such as:

  • Peaceful Community Fish: Small to medium-sized peaceful fish like Tetras, Rasboras, and Danios are suitable companions.
  • Other Catfish: They can be housed with other peaceful species of catfish, provided the tank is large enough.
  • Non-Aggressive Fish: Avoid housing them with aggressive or fin-nipping species that may stress the Synodontis Decorus.

Breeding:

Breeding Synodontis Decorus in the home aquarium is difficult, but possible with the right conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with soft, acidic water and plenty of hiding spots is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C or 79°F).
  • Spawning Behavior: The male will court the female and deposit sperm near the eggs once they are laid. The eggs will hatch in about 2-3 days.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed small live foods such as infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Barbels: Synodontis species rely on their sensitive barbels to detect food. Ensure that the tank has a soft substrate and avoid sharp objects that could damage them.
  • Nocturnal Nature: As a nocturnal species, Synodontis Decorus will be most active at night, so ensure they have hiding spots during the day to reduce stress.
