Spotted Metynnis

The Spotted Metynnis (Metynnis maculatus), commonly known as the Spotted Silver Dollar, is a striking freshwater species native to South America. Recognised for its shimmering silver body marked with distinctive black spots, this peaceful shoaling fish is a popular choice for aquarists looking to add movement and visual interest to larger community aquariums.

Physical Characteristics:

Size: Spotted Metynnis typically grow to around 12–15 cm (5–6 inches) in length.
Body: Bright silver with reflective scales, adorned with scattered black spots that provide a natural camouflage effect.
Fins: Generally translucent with subtle shading, complementing the metallic body.
Shape: Rounded, disc-like body similar to a coin, allowing smooth and graceful swimming.

Behaviour:

Temperament: Peaceful and sociable, making them ideal for community aquariums.
Activity Level: Active swimmers that occupy the middle levels of the tank.
Community Behaviour: A schooling species that should be kept in groups of at least 5 or more to promote natural behaviour and reduce stress.

Aquarium Care:

Tank Size: A minimum of 200 litres is recommended due to their size and schooling nature.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F)
pH: 6.0 to 7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
Tank Setup:
Substrate and Decorations: Provide a spacious tank with open swimming areas, along with driftwood and plants for cover. Note that they may nibble on soft plants.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal.
Filtration: Good filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality.

Diet:

Spotted Metynnis are primarily herbivorous but will accept a varied diet:
Pellets or Flakes: High-quality vegetable-based foods.
Vegetation: Fresh greens such as spinach, lettuce, or spirulina-based foods.
Occasional Protein: Small amounts of live or frozen foods can be offered.
Feed 1–2 times daily in controlled portions.

Tankmates:

They are well-suited to peaceful community aquariums:
Compatible with larger tetras, peaceful cichlids, catfish, and other non-aggressive species.
Avoid keeping with very small fish that may be intimidated or aggressive species that may cause stress.

Breeding:

Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water is recommended.
Spawning Behaviour: Egg scatterers that release eggs into open water.
Egg Care: Adults do not provide parental care and may eat the eggs, so removal is advised.
Fry Care: Fry can be fed finely crushed flake food or specialised fry food once free-swimming.

Special Considerations:

Schooling Requirement: Must be kept in groups to maintain natural behaviour and reduce stress.
Plant Compatibility: May feed on soft plants, so choose hardy species if planting is desired.
Space Requirements: Requires ample swimming space due to active schooling behaviour.
