Royal Pleco (L-191)

The Royal Pleco (*Panaque nigrolineatus*) is a captivating freshwater fish known for its striking appearance and essential role in maintaining the balance of a well-kept aquarium. This species is particularly appreciated in the aquarium hobby for its unique colouration and impressive size, making it an eye-catching addition to community tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Royal Plecos typically grow to about 30-35 cm (12-14 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: They are characterised by their dark brown to black bodies, which are adorned with white or cream-coloured spots and stripes, providing a stunning contrast that enhances their overall appearance.
  • Fins: Their fins are broad and strong, aiding in their ability to navigate through strong currents in their natural habitat.
  • Shape: The body is elongated and laterally compressed, a common trait among plecos, which allows them to fit into tight spaces among rocks and driftwood.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Royal Plecos are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of tankmates. They are more social than some other pleco species and can often be seen interacting with their environment.
  • Activity Level: They are moderately active swimmers, preferring to explore their surroundings and hide among plants and decorations.
  • Community Behavior: These fish can be housed in community tanks, but care should be taken to select peaceful tankmates. Providing plenty of hiding spots will help reduce stress and territorial behaviour.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 150 liters (40 gallons) is recommended for a single Royal Pleco, though larger tanks are preferable for more stable water conditions.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Royal Plecos thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-10 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is recommended. Royal Plecos enjoy a well-decorated tank with plenty of hiding spots, as live plants such as Java fern, Anubias, and driftwood provide cover and mimic their natural habitat.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal for showcasing their colours. Floating plants can help diffuse the light and create shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A strong filtration system is recommended, as Royal Plecos help clean the tank by consuming algae. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential for maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Diet:

Royal Plecos are primarily herbivorous and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets designed for herbivorous fish should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables, such as zucchini or cucumber, can help ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

Royal Plecos can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras.
  • Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Other Bottom-Dwellers: Corydoras catfish or other peaceful bottom-dwellers.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or fin-nippers, as this can lead to stress or injury.

Breeding:

Breeding Royal Plecos can be rewarding and relatively straightforward under the right conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with plenty of hiding spots is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26-28°C or 79-82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5).
  • Spawning Behavior: The male will court the female, and after spawning, the female will lay eggs in a sheltered area, which the male will guard.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or finely crushed flakes.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Royal Plecos.
  • Shy Nature: These fish can be shy, particularly in brightly lit tanks. Providing plenty of hiding spots can help them feel more secure.
