Cochliodon sp., also known as the Rusty Pleco.

Description

  • Size: The Rusty Pleco grows to about 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) in length.

  • Color: It has a unique rusty-brown or reddish-brown coloration, often with dark spots on its body. This color pattern is what gives it the "Rusty" nickname.

  • Behavior: Rusty Plecos are peaceful, nocturnal bottom-dwellers that spend most of their time foraging on the substrate and rocks, especially at night.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size

  • A minimum of 30 gallons (113 liters) is recommended for a single Rusty Pleco. Larger tanks (40 gallons or more) are better, especially if you have other fish in the tank.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: They prefer warm water, between 75°F and 82°F (24°C to 28°C).

  • pH: A slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.5 to 7.5.

  • Hardness: They thrive in soft to moderate hard water (4–15 dGH).

  • Water Quality: They need clean, well-oxygenated water, so a good filter and regular water changes (about 20–30% per week) are important.

Diet

  • Rusty Plecos are great herbivores, primarily eating algae and plant matter.

  • In the aquarium, provide them with algae wafers, vegetable-based pellets, and blanched vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, and spinach.

  • They  also eat some biofilm and detritus in the tank.

Tank Setup

  • Substrate: A fine gravel or sand substrate is best, as they like to forage on the bottom.

  • Aquascaping: Provide plenty of rocks, driftwood, and plants. These plecos enjoy hiding in caves or crevices.

  • Lighting: Moderate lighting is fine. Rusty Plecos are nocturnal, so they don’t need bright lights.

  • Water Movement: They prefer gentle water flow, so choose a filter that provides low to moderate movement.

Tank Mates

  • Rusty Plecos are peaceful but do well with all fish

    • african cichlids
    • tetras
    • barbs
    • most fish except larger predatory fish

Breeding

  • Breeding Rusty Plecos in captivity is rare but possible. They are cave spawners, meaning they lay their eggs in a cave or hidden space. The male guards the eggs until they hatch, and the fry are cared for until they are large enough to fend for themselves.

Summary

  • The Rusty Pleco is the best algae eater!

  • Provide them with a varied diet of algae wafers, vegetables, and clean water.

  • They need hiding spots like caves or driftwood
