Scientific Name:
Holacanthus passer
Reefsafe:
No
General Size Specifications:
This species typically grows up to 12-14 inches (30-35 cm) in length as an adult, but juveniles are smaller.
Habitat:
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the juvenile King Angel is commonly found in coral reefs, particularly in areas with rocky crevices and coral formations. As it matures, it can adapt to deeper waters, but juveniles prefer shallow reef environments where they can find shelter and forage for food.
Approx Lifespan:
In captivity, King Angels can live for 15-20 years with proper care.
Feeding and Diet:
This omnivorous species feeds on a variety of foods, including algae, small invertebrates, and coral polyps. In aquariums, they benefit from a varied diet that includes high-quality algae-based foods, meaty foods, and frozen foods to ensure optimal health and vibrant coloration.
Breeding:
Breeding King Angels in captivity is rare. In the wild, they form pairs, and the male will guard the female and their territory. The eggs are released into the water and fertilized externally. A stable environment with plenty of space and hiding spots can encourage natural behaviors and possibly breeding.
