Physical Characteristics:

• Size: Marble Hatchets typically grow to about 5-6 cm (2-2.4 inches) in length.
• Coloration:
  • Body: The body is relatively flat and silver with a marbled pattern that includes shades of brown and black, resembling the surface of a marble.
  • Fins: The fins are transparent, with a slight tint that matches the body coloration, giving them an elegant appearance.
  • Shape: Their unique shape and structure allow them to glide on the water's surface, which is characteristic of their natural habitat.

Behaviour:

• Temperament: Marble Hatchets are peaceful and can be housed with other small, non-aggressive fish. They are best kept in schools of at least 5-6 individuals to promote social behaviour.
• Activity Level: They are active swimmers and are known for their unique gliding movement just below the water's surface.
• Community Behaviour: These fish thrive in a well-planted tank with plenty of open swimming space and are best suited for community tanks with other small, gentle species.

Aquarium Care:

• Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a small school of Marble Hatchets.
• Water Parameters:
  • Temperature: They prefer warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
  • pH: A slightly acidic to neutral pH level, ideally between 6.0 and 7.5, is preferred.
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-10 dGH, is ideal.
• Tank Setup:
  • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate with plenty of floating plants is recommended. Marble Hatchets appreciate a well-decorated tank with plenty of plants and hiding spots.
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal, with floating plants providing shaded areas.
  • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is essential, as strong currents can stress the fish. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are crucial for maintaining water quality.

Diet:

Marble Hatchets are omnivorous and require a varied diet:

• Flakes: High-quality flakes or small pellets should form the staple of their diet.
• Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and mosquito larvae to provide essential protein and variety.
• Occasional Treats: Small freeze-dried foods can be offered occasionally but should not replace their main diet.

Breeding:

Breeding Marble Hatchets is possible, although it requires specific conditions:

• Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water and plenty of floating plants is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5).
• Spawning Behaviour: The male will court the female, and after spawning, the eggs will float on the surface.
• Fry Care: Once the fry hatch, they can be fed infusoria or finely crushed flakes until they are large enough for larger foods.

Special Considerations:

• Jumping: Marble Hatchets are known for their jumping ability, so ensure the tank is covered to prevent escapes.
• Water Quality: Maintaining clean water and good tank conditions is crucial for their health.
