Dario Botia Loach
The Dario Botia Loach (Botia dario), also known as the Bengal Loach or Queen Loach, is a captivating freshwater species native to the Ganges and Brahmaputra river basins in northern India, Bangladesh, and Bhutan.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: Typically reaches up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
- Colouration: Features a base colour ranging from light to dusky yellowish or greenish, adorned with 7-9 blue, green, grey, or black body bars. These bars may break up to varying degrees, resulting in a highly variable pattern.
- Distinctive Features: Possesses four pairs of barbels around the mouth and small, embedded scales, giving it a scaleless appearance.
Behaviour:
- Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive; best kept in groups of at least five to reduce territorial behaviour.
- Activity Level: Active scavengers that enjoy exploring their environment.
- Tankmates: Compatible with other semi-aggressive species; avoid housing with significantly smaller or slow-moving fish.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank Size: A minimum of 30 gallons (approximately 114 litres) is recommended.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72°F to 86°F (22°C to 30°C).
- pH: 6.0 to 7.5.
- Hardness: KH 8-12.
- Tank Setup: Provide caves, holes, and other hiding spots to mimic their natural environment. A well-planted tank with a sandy or fine gravel substrate is ideal.
Diet:
Omnivorous; feed a varied diet including bloodworms, brine shrimp, and high-quality flake or pellet food. Younger loaches may eat most prepared foods, while older ones might be more finicky.
Breeding:
Breeding habits are not well-documented, and successful captive breeding has yet to be recorded.
