Tricolor Angelfish

The Tricolor Angelfish (*Pterophyllum scalare*) is a striking variety of angelfish, known for its beautiful, vibrant colouration that blends hues of gold, black, and white, making it a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts. This freshwater fish is a peaceful species, but it can be territorial during breeding. With its unique appearance, the Tricolor Angelfish adds elegance to any aquarium.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Tricolor Angelfish typically grow to about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: They are known for their bright gold bodies, with dark vertical black stripes running down their sides. The fins are also usually a mix of black and white, creating a distinctive and beautiful contrast.
  • Fins: The fins are long and flowing, contributing to the elegant and graceful appearance of the fish. The dorsal fin is particularly long, which adds to the overall beauty of the fish.
  • Shape: The body is flat and oval, which is characteristic of all angelfish species. The tail fin is triangular, enhancing their streamlined look.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Tricolor Angelfish are peaceful and calm but can become territorial, especially when breeding. They tend to be more aggressive toward other angelfish or fish that invade their territory.
  • Activity Level: They are moderately active swimmers and can often be seen gliding gracefully around the aquarium. They prefer to swim in the mid-level of the tank.
  • Community Behavior: These fish can coexist peacefully with other non-aggressive species, especially in a well-maintained community tank with plenty of space for each fish.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Tricolor Angelfish. Larger tanks are better for stability and providing ample space for swimming.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Tricolor Angelfish thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-8 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is ideal. Tricolor Angelfish enjoy a tank with plenty of plants for hiding and swimming spaces. Plants like Amazon Sword and Java Fern are great choices, as well as driftwood to add natural beauty to the aquarium.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best, as it helps showcase their beautiful colours. Some floating plants can help provide shaded areas for the fish to feel more secure.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as angelfish do not like strong water currents. Regular water changes (about 25% weekly) are essential to maintain good water quality.

Diet:

Tricolor Angelfish are omnivorous and require a varied diet. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets designed for angelfish should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: They also enjoy vegetable matter, such as blanched spinach, zucchini, or algae wafers, which should be offered occasionally to help ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

Tricolor Angelfish can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras.
  • Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras or Scissortail Rasboras.
  • Corydoras Catfish: Peaceful bottom-dwelling catfish like Corydoras can be good companions for angelfish.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or fish that may nip at their fins, as this can lead to stress or injury.

Breeding:

Breeding Tricolor Angelfish can be rewarding, and with the right setup, it can be a relatively straightforward process:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with gentle filtration and shallow water (about 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches) is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.5-7.0).
  • Spawning Behavior: The pair will lay their eggs on a flat surface such as a leaf or a smooth rock. After fertilisation, the male and female will guard the eggs, ensuring they hatch.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, the parents should be removed to prevent them from eating the fry. The fry can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Tricolor Angelfish.
  • Shy Nature: These fish can be shy and should be given plenty of hiding spots to feel secure, especially in a busy community tank.
