Platinum Gourami

The Platinum Gourami (*Trichopodus leerii*) is a captivating variant of the popular Gourami, known for its striking platinum coloration and peaceful nature. This fish is a popular choice among aquarists for its unique appearance and compatibility with a variety of tank mates.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Platinum Gouramis typically grow to about 7.5-10 cm (3-4 inches) in length.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: The body features a shimmering platinum hue that can range from silver to a pearlescent white, creating an eye-catching appearance.
    • Fins: The fins are usually translucent and may have slight hints of blue or green, enhancing their elegant look.
  • Shape: These Gouramis have a deep, laterally compressed body, giving them a graceful swimming style.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Platinum Gouramis are generally peaceful and can coexist well with various non-aggressive species. They may display territorial behaviour, particularly during breeding, but are typically not aggressive.
  • Activity Level: They are moderate swimmers and enjoy exploring their surroundings, often spending time in the middle and upper levels of the tank.
  • Community Behaviour: These fish thrive in community tanks and can be kept with other peaceful species, but care should be taken to avoid housing them with overly aggressive fish.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 60 litres (15 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Platinum Gouramis, as they prefer ample swimming space.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Platinum Gouramis thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-8 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended, along with plenty of hiding spots created with live plants, driftwood, and rocks. Floating plants can also provide shade and mimic their natural habitat.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is preferred, as they are native to dimly lit environments. Floating plants or leaves can help create natural, shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress the fish. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential to maintain water quality.

Diet:

Platinum Gouramis are omnivorous and require a varied diet to maintain their health and vibrant colours. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality small pellets designed for tropical fish should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: They also benefit from the addition of blanched vegetables, such as zucchini or spinach, to their diet.

Feed them 2-3 times daily, providing only as much food as they can consume in a few minutes to avoid overfeeding and maintain water quality.

Tankmates:

Platinum Gouramis can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small, peaceful fish: Such as Tetras, Rasboras, or other small community fish.
  • Bottom-dwellers: Corydoras catfish or similar species that occupy the lower regions of the tank.
  • Shrimp: Peaceful invertebrates like Amano shrimp or Cherry shrimp can coexist well with Platinum Gouramis.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or larger fish that may bully them, as this can lead to stress or injury.
