Orange Peacock Cichlid

The Orange Peacock Cichlid (also known as Aulonocara baenschi) is a vibrant freshwater fish native to Lake Malawi in Africa. This species is admired for its stunning orange coloration, which can range from bright tangerine to deep gold. The Orange Peacock Cichlid is a popular choice among aquarists due to its beauty and relatively peaceful nature compared to other cichlids.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Orange Peacock Cichlids typically grow to about 10-12 cm (4-5 inches) in length.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: The body of the Orange Peacock Cichlid is predominantly orange, with variations in intensity and hue. Some individuals may exhibit bluish accents or spots, particularly on the fins.
    • Fins: Their fins are usually a vibrant orange or yellow, enhancing their overall appearance.
    • Shape: They have a streamlined body shape, typical of many cichlid species, allowing them to be agile swimmers.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Orange Peacock Cichlids are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially during breeding. Males may show aggression towards one another, particularly in smaller tanks.
  • Activity Level: These cichlids are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, often searching for food among the rocks and plants in the tank.
  • Community Behaviour: They can coexist with other peaceful fish but should be housed in larger tanks to provide adequate space and reduce territorial disputes.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 200 litres (53 gallons) is recommended for a group of Orange Peacock Cichlids to provide ample swimming space and territory.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: They thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: Slightly alkaline water is preferred, with a pH range of 7.5 to 8.5.
    • Hardness: Moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 10-20 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A sandy substrate is ideal, as it mimics their natural habitat. Provide plenty of hiding spots using rocks, caves, and driftwood to create territories and reduce aggression.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best for showcasing their vibrant colours while not overwhelming them.
    • Filtration: A strong filtration system is essential to maintain water quality, as cichlids can produce a significant amount of waste. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are also important.

Diet:

Orange Peacock Cichlids are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive:

  • Pellets: High-quality cichlid pellets should form the staple of their diet, providing essential nutrients.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide variety and protein.
  • Vegetation: They can also benefit from occasional vegetable matter, such as spirulina or blanched spinach, to ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

Orange Peacock Cichlids can be housed with various peaceful species that share similar water parameters. Suitable tankmates include:

  • Other Cichlids: Peaceful African cichlids like some species of Mbuna.
  • Large Tetras: Such as Congo Tetras.
  • Catfish: Such as Synodontis species, which can help clean up uneaten food.

Breeding:

Breeding Orange Peacock Cichlids can be rewarding, although it requires specific conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with plenty of flat surfaces for egg-laying is recommended. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly alkaline (pH 7.5-8.5).
  • Spawning Behaviour: The male will court the female and guide her to the breeding site where she will lay eggs. The male will guard the eggs until they hatch, typically within 3-5 days.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Aggression Management: Monitor aggression levels closely, especially during breeding, to ensure compatibility with other tankmates.
  • Space Requirements: Due to their size and territorial behaviour, Orange Peacock Cichlids require ample space in the aquarium to thrive.
