Betta Antuta is a lesser-known, yet highly attractive species of betta fish belonging to the family Osphronemidae. Like other members of the Betta genus, the Betta Antuta is known for its vibrant colors, territorial behavior, and unique reproductive strategies, making it a sought-after species among betta enthusiasts and aquarists. While not as widely recognized as Betta splendens (Siamese fighting fish), the Betta Antuta captivates with its elegant appearance and engaging behavior.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: Betta Antuta typically grows to around 5-7 cm (2-3 inches) in length, with males usually being slightly larger and more colorful than females.
- Coloration: The coloration of Betta Antuta can vary but is often vibrant, with shades of red, blue, green, and iridescent highlights across the body and fins. Males typically display more intense colors, especially during courtship or territorial displays.
- Fins: Like other bettas, Betta Antuta has long, flowing fins that give it a graceful appearance. The fins may have unique patterns or color gradients, adding to its visual appeal.
Behavior:
- Temperament: Betta Antuta is territorial, especially males, which can be aggressive toward other males and sometimes even toward other species. They establish territories in the aquarium and may flare their fins or chase intruders to defend their space.
- Social Behavior: Males are best kept alone or with non-aggressive tankmates. Females are generally less aggressive and can sometimes be housed together in groups, provided there is enough space and hiding spots to reduce aggression.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank Size: A single Betta Antuta can thrive in a tank of at least 20 liters (5 gallons), though larger tanks are preferable if keeping a pair or multiple fish. A heavily planted aquarium with plenty of hiding places is ideal, as it mimics their natural habitat.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: Betta Antuta prefers warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
- pH: They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
- Hardness: The water should be soft to moderately hard, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-12 dGH.
- Tank Setup: A well-planted tank with floating plants, driftwood, and caves is recommended to provide hiding spots and reduce stress. Betta Antuta also enjoys slow-moving water, so avoid strong filtration systems.
Diet:
Betta Antuta is an omnivore, and its diet should include a variety of high-quality foods:
- Pellets or Flakes: High-quality betta pellets or flakes should form the basis of their diet.
- Live or Frozen Foods: Bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and mosquito larvae provide essential protein and help maintain their vibrant colors.
- Vegetable Matter: Occasionally include plant-based foods such as spirulina or blanched vegetables to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tankmates:
Due to their territorial nature, Betta Antuta is best kept with peaceful species that are not fin nippers or overly aggressive. Suitable tankmates include:
- Small tetras (e.g., neon tetras, ember tetras)
- Corydoras catfish
- Peaceful rasboras
Avoid housing them with other male bettas or species with long fins, as this may provoke aggression.
Breeding:
Betta Antuta follows typical betta breeding behavior, where males create bubble nests at the water's surface.
- Bubble Nests: Males will build a bubble nest where the female will lay eggs after courtship. The male then takes responsibility for guarding the eggs and fry.
- Raising Fry: Once the eggs hatch, the fry can be fed with infusoria or specially designed fry food. The male should be separated from the fry once they are free-swimming to prevent any potential harm.
