The Tire Track Eel, scientifically known as Mastacembelus armatus, is a captivating and unique species of freshwater eel, popular among aquarium enthusiasts for its distinct markings and interesting behaviour.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Named for its distinctive pattern of dark lines and spots, resembling the tread of a tire, which runs along its elongated body.
  • They can grow quite large, often reaching up to 28 inches (70 cm) in captivity.
  • Its body is slender and snake-like, with a pointed snout and small, beady eyes.

Natural Habitat:

  • Native to the rivers and streams of Southeast Asia, including countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and parts of India.
  • In the wild, they are typically found in murky waters with plenty of hiding spots.

Care and Aquarium Setup:

  • Due to their size and activity level, a large aquarium with a minimum size of 55 gallons is recommended.
  • The tank should have a soft substrate, plenty of hiding places, and tightly secured lids as these eels are known to be escape artists.
  • Water conditions should include a temperature range of 24-28°C, with a neutral pH and moderate hardness.

Diet:

  • Tire Track Eels are carnivorous and prefer a diet of live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small fish.
  • They are nocturnal hunters, so feeding should occur in the evening or at night.

Behaviour and Compatibility:

  • These eels are generally peaceful but can be predatory towards smaller fish and invertebrates.
  • Best kept with medium to large-sized fish that are not small enough to be considered prey.

The Tire Track Eel offers a unique addition to a large freshwater aquarium, appealing to aquarists looking for a distinctive and interesting species to observe and care for.
