Tree Corals may also be referred to as Paralemnia or Lemnalia Tree Corals, Finger Leather, Branch, or Cauliflower Corals. They are brown branching corals which form encrusting mats. In the wild, they are usually found in strong currents. They are aggressive and can produce toxins, so adequate space needs to be provided between them and other corals within the reef aquarium. They are moderately difficult to maintain in the reef aquarium but make excellent corals for the established reef aquarium system. They require medium to high lighting combined with medium to strong water movement. They seem to prefer a coarse gravel substrate. For continued good health, they will also require the addition of iodine, strontium, and other trace elements to the water. The symbiotic algae zooxanthellae are hosted within Paralemnia Tree Corals and provide the majority of their nutritional requirements from the light driven process of photosynthesis. They will also benefit from additional food such as micro-plankton, baby brine shrimp, or foods designed for filter feeding invertebrates.
