McCosker’s Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus mccoskeri) – A Dazzling Display of Color and Motion

Description

The McCosker’s Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus mccoskeri) is a breathtakingly vibrant reef fish, prized for its iridescent blue, red, and orange hues and its electrifying courtship displays.

Males are especially striking, with elongated dorsal and anal fins that "flash" dramatically when excited, showcasing neon streaks of yellow, blue, and red.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, from the Maldives to Fiji, this species is known for its active swimming patterns and peaceful temperament, making it a fantastic addition to a reef aquarium.

With its constant movement and social nature, the McCosker’s Flasher Wrasse adds life and excitement to any saltwater tank.

Aquarium Care Guide

???? Tank Setup & Water Conditions

This wrasse thrives in a spacious, well-oxygenated tank with plenty of rockwork and open swimming space.

  • Tank Size: 40+ gallons (larger preferred for multiple wrasses)
  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025
  • Water Flow: Moderate to high (mimicking reef currents)
  • Substrate: Fine sand or mixed grain (optional but ideal for comfort)
  • Hiding Spots: Live rock caves and crevices for security
  • Lid Requirement: TIGHT-FITTING LID IS A MUST! Flasher wrasses are notorious jumpers, so a secure cover is essential.

???? Lighting & Environment:
Bright reef lighting enhances their natural coloration. If keeping multiple wrasses, provide ample swimming space and multiple hiding spots to reduce aggression.

???? Diet & Feeding – A Fast and Energetic Feeder

The McCosker’s Flasher Wrasse is a carnivore, feeding on small invertebrates and zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, it thrives on a protein-rich diet with a mix of live and frozen foods.

  • Best Foods:
Live & frozen planktonic foods (Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods)
    High-quality marine pellets & flakes (small-sized)
    Occasional treats (blackworms, enriched Artemia)

???? Feeding Tip: These wrasses are fast eaters, so feeding small portions 2–3 times a day helps maintain their energy levels and vibrant colors.

???? Behavior & Tank Mates

McCosker’s Flasher Wrasses are peaceful and social, making them ideal for reef tanks and community setups. Males display flashing behaviors to impress females or assert dominance, making them highly interactive fish.

  • Best Tank Mates:
Other peaceful reef fish (gobies, blennies, anthias, firefish)
Other wrasses (if introduced together in a larger tank)
Reef-safe invertebrates (shrimp, snails, hermit crabs)

  • Avoid:
Large, aggressive fish (triggers, groupers, aggressive tangs)
Territorial fish that may stress it (large dottybacks, aggressive damsels)

???? Keeping Multiple Wrasses:
✅ If keeping multiple McCosker’s Flasher Wrasses, it's best to have one male with multiple females in a larger tank to prevent aggression.
✅ If introducing multiple wrasses, add them at the same time to reduce territorial disputes.
