Scientific Name:

Hippuris vulgaris

Overview:

Hippuris vulgaris, commonly known as Common Mare’s Tail, is a hardy oxygenating aquatic plant with bright green, upright stems that create an attractive bottlebrush-like appearance above the water. It is especially useful for pond margins and shallow water areas, helping to oxygenate and purify the water while providing valuable shelter for aquatic wildlife.

Care Level:

Easy

Lighting Requirements:

Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Good light encourages strong upright growth and healthy green foliage.

Watering / Planting Depth:

Best planted in shallow water at a depth of approximately 5–30cm. In deeper water, it may grow fully submerged.

Placement Tips:

  • Ideal for pond margins, wildlife ponds, and shallow aquatic planting areas
  • Excellent oxygenating plant that helps support a balanced pond ecosystem
  • Provides shelter for fish fry, tadpoles, insects, and other aquatic life
  • Best grown in a planting basket to help manage its spread

Approximate Size:

Typically supplied at approximately 9cm. Mature plants can reach around 20–50cm in height, with a spreading habit under favourable conditions.

Important Note:

  • Fully hardy and suitable for outdoor ponds in Ireland
  • Fast-growing and may spread, so occasional thinning is recommended
  • Dies back in colder months and regrows from rhizomes in spring
  • Beneficial for water quality as it absorbs excess nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates

Ordering Note:

  • One plant per order
  • Plant size and fullness may vary depending on the season
