Lohachata Botia Loach

The Lohachata Botia Loach (Botia lohachata), also known as the Yoyo Loach, is a popular freshwater fish found in the rivers and streams of Southeast Asia, particularly in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh. Recognised for its playful behaviour and striking pattern, this loach is a delightful addition to community aquariums.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Typically grows to about 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) in length.
  • Colouration: Exhibits a light brown or yellowish body adorned with dark, wavy stripes and spots, resembling a yoyo pattern, which gives it its common name.
  • Distinctive Features: The elongated, slender body is complemented by its vibrant colouration and distinct markings.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful and sociable, making them suitable for community tanks. They may show territorial behaviour when kept with similar species.
  • Activity Level: Active swimmers that enjoy exploring their environment and are known for their playful antics.
  • Tankmates: Compatible with a variety of peaceful fish; avoid aggressive species that may stress them.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended for a small group, as they thrive in social settings.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F).
    • pH: 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, around 5-15 dGH.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a sandy substrate with plenty of hiding spots using rocks, caves, and plants to mimic their natural environment.

Diet:

Omnivorous; feed a varied diet that includes high-quality sinking pellets, flake food, and live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. They also enjoy blanched vegetables, providing essential nutrients.

Breeding:

Breeding in captivity has not been extensively documented, but they are known to spawn in shallow waters in their natural habitat during the rainy season.

The Lohachata Botia Loach is a charming fish that adds a lively dynamic to any aquarium, making it a favourite among fish keepers.
