Horseface Loach

The Horseface Loach (Acantopsis choirorhynchos) is a unique freshwater fish native to the slow-moving rivers and streams of Southeast Asia, particularly in countries like Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. Known for its distinctive snout and elongated body, this loach is a fascinating addition to community aquariums.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Can grow up to 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) in length.
  • Colouration: Features a pale brown or yellowish body adorned with dark spots and a distinctive horse-like snout, which gives it its name.
  • Distinctive Features: The elongated body and flattened head are characteristic of this species, making it easily recognisable.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful and social, making them suitable for community tanks. They are known to be shy and may hide among plants and decorations.
  • Activity Level: Active foragers that spend a lot of time exploring the substrate in search of food.
  • Tankmates: Compatible with a variety of peaceful fish; avoid aggressive species that may stress them.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended for a small group, as they thrive in social settings.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, around 5-15 dGH.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a sandy substrate along with plenty of hiding spots using rocks, caves, and dense vegetation to mimic their natural habitat.

Diet:

Omnivorous; feed a varied diet that includes high-quality sinking pellets, flake food, and live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. They enjoy foraging, so incorporating blanched vegetables can also be beneficial.

Breeding:

Breeding in captivity has not been extensively documented, but they are known to spawn in shallow waters in their natural habitat during the rainy season.

The Horseface Loach is a captivating fish that brings a unique appearance and behaviour to any aquarium, making it a desirable choice for enthusiasts.
