Dark Angel Discus

The Dark Angel Discus is a selectively bred freshwater species prized for its deep, rich colouration and elegant, rounded form. As one of the most sought-after aquarium fish, Discus are admired for their graceful movement and calm presence, making them a centrepiece in well-maintained aquariums.

Physical Characteristics:

Size: Dark Angel Discus typically grow to around 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) in diameter when fully mature.
Coloration:
Body: Displays deep, dark tones with subtle patterning, enhanced through selective breeding for vibrant and uniform colouration.
Fins: Fins are delicate and flow smoothly with the body, often matching or complementing the overall colour.
Shape: Distinctive disc-shaped, laterally compressed body giving a smooth, rounded appearance.

Behaviour:

Temperament: Generally peaceful, though can become slightly territorial during breeding.
Activity Level: Calm swimmers that prefer a stable and quiet environment.
Community Behaviour: Best kept in groups, allowing them to form natural hierarchies and pair bonds.

Aquarium Care:

Tank Size: A minimum of 200 litres is recommended, especially when keeping groups.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 27°C to 30°C
pH: 5.5 to 6.5
Hardness: Soft water preferred
Tank Setup:
Substrate and Decorations: Replicate their natural habitat with driftwood, branches, and plants, providing shaded areas and cover.
Lighting: Soft to moderate lighting to mimic shaded environments.
Filtration: Excellent filtration and frequent water changes are essential to maintain high water quality.

Diet:

Dark Angel Discus are largely carnivorous and require a nutrient-rich diet:
Pellets: Specialised Discus pellets should form the staple diet.
Frozen Foods: Bloodworms, tubifex, and other meaty frozen foods.
Prepared Foods: High-quality flake foods can also be included.
Feed multiple small meals daily for optimal health.

Tankmates:

Suitable tankmates include peaceful species that thrive in warm, soft water:
Tetras, Corydoras catfish, and peaceful dwarf cichlids.
Avoid aggressive or highly active species that may stress Discus.

Breeding:

Breeding Setup: Warm, soft, slightly acidic water with flat surfaces such as broad leaves or tank walls.
Spawning Behaviour: Pairs will clean a flat surface before laying eggs.
Egg Care: Parents guard the eggs and should not be removed.
Fry Care: Fry feed on a mucous secretion from the parents’ skin, making parental presence essential.

Special Considerations:

Water Quality: Requires pristine water conditions with consistent maintenance.
Environment: Prefers calm, stable aquariums with minimal disturbance.
Social Structure: Keeping groups allows natural pairing and reduces stress.
