Buttikoferi Cichlid Description

Buttikoferi Cichlid (Hemichromis bimaculatus)

The Buttikoferi Cichlid, also known as the Zebra Cichlid, is a robust and highly territorial species native to West Africa. Characterized by its striking black and white vertical stripes and aggressive nature, the Buttikoferi Cichlid is a fascinating yet challenging fish for experienced aquarists.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Displays a bold pattern of thick black stripes on a yellow to white background, giving it a striking appearance.
  • Adults can reach a substantial size, typically growing up to 12 inches (30 cm) in captivity.
  • Their robust build and pronounced dorsal and anal fins add to their imposing presence.

Natural Habitat:

  • Found in a variety of freshwater habitats across West Africa, including rivers, streams, and lakes.
  • Prefers environments with ample hiding places and territories, often establishing domains among submerged roots and rocks.

Care and Aquarium Setup:

  • Due to their size and territorial behavior, a large aquarium of at least 75 gallons is necessary for one or a pair.
  • The aquarium layout should include plenty of rocks, driftwood, and hiding spaces to mimic their natural habitat and help manage aggression.
  • Water conditions should be maintained with temperatures ranging from 75-82°F (24-28°C) and a pH of 6.5-7.5.

Diet:

  • Omnivorous, with a diet that includes a mix of plant-based foods and protein. In the wild, they feed on insects, crustaceans, and plant matter.
  • In captivity, a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, vegetables, and occasional live or frozen foods will ensure their nutritional needs are met.

Behaviour and Compatibility:

  • Known for their aggressive and territorial nature, especially towards conspecifics and during breeding.
  • Best kept with other large and similarly aggressive species to minimize conflict.
  • Careful consideration and planning are necessary when adding to a community tank to ensure compatibility and reduce stress.
