The Albino Tinfoil Barb (Barbonymus schwanenfeldii) is a striking and popular variety of the Tinfoil Barb, known for its brilliant white and red coloration. This freshwater fish is native to Southeast Asia and can be found in rivers, lakes, and flooded forests. Albino Tinfoil Barbs are prized for their bright, metallic appearance and energetic swimming behavior, making them a favorite among aquarists with large tanks. However, due to their large size and active nature, they are best suited for spacious aquariums with plenty of room for swimming.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Albino Tinfoil Barbs are large fish, growing up to 30-35 cm (12-14 inches) in length when fully mature.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: Albino Tinfoil Barbs have a pearly white or pale pink body with a reflective, metallic sheen. Their albino pigmentation gives them their characteristic bright red or orange eyes.
    • Fins: The fins are bright red or orange, contrasting sharply with their pale body. This vivid coloration is especially noticeable on the dorsal, caudal, and pectoral fins, making them a visually striking addition to any aquarium.
  • Shape: Like other Tinfoil Barbs, they have a torpedo-shaped body with large, reflective scales that shimmer in the light. Their streamlined body and forked tail make them excellent swimmers.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Albino Tinfoil Barbs are peaceful fish but highly active and fast swimmers. They are social and should be kept in groups of 5 or more to prevent stress and promote natural schooling behavior. In a group, they are more confident and display less skittish behavior.
  • Activity Level: These fish are constantly moving and need a large tank with open swimming areas. They are known for their high energy and can sometimes startle more timid tankmates with their speed and activity.
  • Community Behavior: While peaceful, they may outcompete smaller or slower fish for food due to their size and active nature. However, they generally coexist well with other large, peaceful species.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: Due to their large size and active swimming behavior, a minimum tank size of 500 liters (132 gallons) is recommended for a school of Albino Tinfoil Barbs. Larger tanks are even better, as these fish require ample swimming space and grow quite large.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Albino Tinfoil Barbs thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-12 dGH.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is ideal, but gravel can also be used. While Albino Tinfoil Barbs are not particularly fussy about decorations, they do appreciate some plants or driftwood to mimic their natural environment. Be mindful that they may nibble on softer plants, so use hardy plants or artificial ones if necessary.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting will highlight their metallic sheen and bright red fins. Since they are active swimmers, it's important to provide plenty of open space for them to move freely.
  • Filtration: Albino Tinfoil Barbs produce a lot of waste due to their size and active nature, so a strong filtration system is essential to maintain water quality. Regular water changes (at least 25% weekly) are important to keep the tank clean and the water parameters stable.

Diet:

Albino Tinfoil Barbs are omnivores and have a voracious appetite. They require a varied diet to stay healthy and maintain their vibrant coloration.

  • Pellets or Flakes: High-quality pellets or flakes formulated for large omnivorous fish should form the staple of their diet.
  • Vegetable Matter: They enjoy plant-based foods, so offering them blanched vegetables like spinach, zucchini, or peas is beneficial.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Algae Wafers: Albino Tinfoil Barbs will also accept algae wafers, which provide both nutrition and some enrichment.

Feed them 2-3 times daily, ensuring that all food is consumed within a few minutes to prevent water pollution.

Tankmates:

Albino Tinfoil Barbs are peaceful fish but due to their large size and active behavior, they are best housed with other large, robust fish. Suitable tankmates include:

  • Other large barbs: Like Tinfoil Barbs or Bala Sharks.
  • Large peaceful cichlids: Such as Severums or Uaru.
  • Large catfish: Such as Plecos or Synodontis catfish.
  • Silver Dollars: Another schooling fish that shares similar behavior and environmental requirements.

Avoid keeping them with small or slow-moving fish, as the barbs' size and activity may cause stress or result in smaller fish being accidentally injured. Similarly, avoid highly aggressive species that might bully the Albino Tinfoil Barbs.

Breeding:

Breeding Albino Tinfoil Barbs in captivity is difficult due to their size and the large space requirements. In the wild, they spawn in rivers during the rainy season. In aquariums, breeding attempts require very large tanks with specific conditions.

  • Spawning Behavior: Tinfoil Barbs are egg scatterers, and breeding typically takes place in large groups. Females will scatter eggs throughout the tank, and males will fertilize them.
  • Egg Care: The adults do not provide parental care and may eat the eggs, so if breeding is successful, it's best to separate the eggs from the adults. The eggs will hatch within 24-48 hours, and the fry can be fed with infusoria or finely crushed flakes until they are large enough to eat larger foods.

Special Considerations:

  • Space Requirements: Albino Tinfoil Barbs are large, fast swimmers and require a lot of space. Keeping them in undersized tanks can lead to stress, stunted growth, and health problems.
  • Water Quality: Due to their large size and waste production, maintaining excellent water quality is essential. Regular water changes and strong filtration are necessary to keep them healthy and prevent issues like fin rot or other infections.
