Timor Wrasse (Halichoeres timorensis) – A Rare and Vibrant Reef Beauty

Description

The Timor Wrasse (Halichoeres timorensis) is a striking and somewhat rare species, admired for its brilliant green body adorned with electric blue markings and subtle yellow highlights.

This fish exhibits different color variations as it matures, with juveniles often displaying more muted tones that intensify over time.

Originating from the Indo-Pacific, particularly around Timor and nearby regions, this species is reef-safe, active, and beneficial in controlling small pests like flatworms and bristle worms.

Its graceful swimming and constant foraging make it a lively and captivating addition to a peaceful to semi-aggressive reef tank.

Aquarium Care Guide

???? Tank Setup & Water Conditions

Like other Halichoeres wrasses, the Timor Wrasse thrives in a spacious, well-maintained reef tank with plenty of live rock and a soft sand bed for burrowing at night.

  • Tank Size: 50+ gallons (larger preferred for multiple wrasses)
  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025
  • Water Flow: Moderate to strong (to mimic natural reef currents)
  • Substrate: Fine sand (essential for burrowing and sleeping)
  • Hiding Spots: Live rock structures for shelter and security
  • Lid Requirement: TIGHT-FITTING LID IS A MUST! Timor Wrasses are exceptional jumpers, so a secure cover is necessary.

???? Lighting & Environment:
Bright reef lighting enhances their vibrant green and blue tones. A well-established reef tank with live rock provides ample space for hiding and foraging.

???? Diet & Feeding – A Natural Pest Controller

Timor Wrasses are carnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates and zooplankton in the wild. In a home aquarium, they thrive on a protein-rich diet and contribute to natural pest control by consuming flatworms, bristle worms, and small crustaceans.

  • Best Foods:
Live & frozen meaty foods (Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods)
    High-quality marine pellets & flakes (small-sized, protein-rich
    Occasional treats (blackworms, enriched Artemia)

???? Feeding Tip: These wrasses are constant foragers, so feeding small portions 2–3 times a day ensures they stay active and healthy.

???? Behavior & Tank Mates

The Timor Wrasse is peaceful to semi-aggressive, making it a great addition to community reef tanks. It is always on the move, exploring rock crevices and sand beds in search of food.

  • Best Tank Mates:
Other peaceful to semi-aggressive reef fish (clownfish, gobies, blennies, fairy wrasses)
Other wrasses (if introduced at the same time in a larger tank)
Reef-safe invertebrates (shrimp, snails, hermit crabs)

  • Avoid:
Very small, timid fish that might get outcompeted for food
Large, aggressive fish (triggers, groupers, large dottybacks)
Slow-moving invertebrates (feather dusters, as wrasses may nip at them)

???? Keeping Multiple Wrasses:
If housing multiple wrasses, introduce them at the same time to establish a natural pecking order and prevent territorial aggression.
