Picasso Clarkii Clownfish (Amphiprion clarkii) – A Bold and Unique Twist on a Classic

Description

The Picasso Clarkii Clownfish is a stunning designer variant of the Clarkii Clownfish (Amphiprion clarkii), featuring bold, irregular white markings against a backdrop of rich orange, deep brown, or black hues.

Each fish has a one-of-a-kind pattern, making it a truly unique addition to any saltwater aquarium.

Known for their hardy nature, adaptability, and bold personality, Picasso Clarkii Clownfish are excellent choices for both beginners and experienced reef keepers.

Unlike some other clownfish species, Clarkii clowns are strong swimmers, less picky about anemones, and capable of thriving in a variety of tank conditions.

Aquarium Care Guide

???? Tank Setup & Water Conditions

These clownfish are robust and adaptable, but they thrive best in a well-maintained saltwater aquarium with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots.

  • Tank Size: 30+ gallons (larger preferred for pairs or hosting anemones)
  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025
  • Water Flow: Moderate (can handle higher flow than some other clowns)
  • Hiding Spots: Live rock structures, caves, or coral formations
  • Lighting: Standard reef lighting (brighter if housing anemones)

???? Anemone Compatibility:
Unlike some picky clownfish, the Clarkii species readily hosts in a wide variety of anemones, including:
Bubble-Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor)
Magnificent Sea Anemone (Heteractis magnifica)
Sebae Anemone (Heteractis crispa)

However, anemones are not required, and Picasso Clarkii Clowns will do just fine without one.

???? Diet & Feeding – A Hardy and Eager Eater

Picasso Clarkii Clownfish are omnivorous, requiring a varied diet to maintain their vibrant coloration and energy.

  • Best Foods:
High-quality marine pellets & flakes (for daily nutrition)
Frozen & live foods: Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods
Algae-based foods: Spirulina, nori, enriched flakes

???? Feeding Tip: Feed small portions 2–3 times per day for optimal health and coloration.

???? Behavior & Tank Mates

Picasso Clarkii Clownfish are semi-aggressive, meaning they can be territorial, especially as they mature. They are social but dominant, making them best suited for tanks with similarly sized or larger peaceful fish.

  • Best Tank Mates:
Other peaceful reef fish (gobies, blennies, firefish, fairy wrasses)
Other clownfish (only if paired—they can be aggressive toward other clowns)
Reef-safe invertebrates (shrimp, snails, hermit crabs)

  • Avoid:
Very small, timid fish that may get bullied (e.g., small dartfish)
Other clownfish species unless housed in a very large tank
Large, aggressive fish (triggers, groupers, large dottybacks)

???? Pairing Tip: If keeping a pair, introduce a smaller, juvenile Picasso Clarkii alongside a slightly larger one to encourage pairing. The larger fish will become the dominant female, while the smaller will remain male.
