Amikami Goby – A Cryptic Jewel of the Reef

Description

The Amikami Goby (Callogobius amikami) is a small, cryptic bottom-dweller with a body covered in intricate, maze-like patterns that help it blend into its surroundings. Like others in its genus, it has a slightly bulky head, large eyes adapted for spotting prey, and a compact body well-suited for squeezing into rock crevices.

Because of its shy and secretive nature, this goby often stays close to the substrate, making it a fascinating addition for aquarists who enjoy observing natural behaviors.

Aquarium Care Guide

???? Tank Setup & Water Conditions

To keep this goby healthy and thriving, a well-structured tank with plenty of hiding spots is essential.

  • Tank Size: 20+ gallons (larger for a community setup)
  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025
  • Substrate: Fine sand or small rubble (preferred for burrowing and hiding)
  • Hiding Spots: Live rock caves, PVC pipes, or rock crevices
  • Water Flow: Low to moderate (too much current can stress bottom-dwellers)

This goby prefers a dimly lit environment and will often retreat into hiding spots when feeling threatened. A tank with soft lighting and natural rock formations will help it feel more comfortable.

???? Diet & Feeding – A Tiny Predator

Callogobius amikami is a micro-carnivore, meaning it primarily feeds on tiny invertebrates, worms, and crustaceans in the wild. In captivity, it requires a protein-rich diet to stay healthy.

  • Preferred Foods:
Live & frozen foods: Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods
Finely chopped seafood: Clam, squid, krill
Sinking carnivore pellets & marine fish flakes
    Blackworms & small marine worms

Since this goby is a bottom-dweller, it may struggle to compete with faster fish for food. Target feeding with a turkey baster or feeding in a low-flow area can help ensure it gets enough nutrition.

???? Behavior & Tank Mates

The Amikami Goby is a peaceful but secretive species that spends most of its time hiding among rocks or burrowing into the sand. It can be a solitary fish, but in larger tanks, it may coexist with other small, non-aggressive species.

  • Best Tank Mates:
✔ Other small, peaceful fish (e.g., clownfish, firefish, cardinalfish)
Small invertebrates (e.g., snails, hermit crabs, cleaner shrimp)
Other small gobies or blennies, as long as they are not territorial

  • Avoid:
❌ Large, aggressive fish (e.g., lionfish, triggers, groupers)
❌ Hyperactive swimmers that may stress it out (e.g., large wrasses, damselfish)

While not known to form symbiotic relationships like some other goby species, this fish enjoys burrowing and will appreciate a well-established tank with plenty of hiding places.

Why Choose the Amikami Goby?

Unique and rarely seen in the hobby
Peaceful and reef-safe
Interesting burrowing and hiding behaviors
Great for nano and peaceful community tanks

This goby may not be the most visible fish in your aquarium, but its cryptic beauty and natural behaviors make it a rewarding species for dedicated aquarists.

If you enjoy keeping small, elusive fish that add a touch of mystery to your reef, Callogobius amikami is a great choice!
