Brichardi Cichlid Description

Brichardi Cichlid (Neolamprologus brichardi)

The Brichardi Cichlid, also known as the Fairy Cichlid, is a graceful and elegant species native to the alkaline waters of Lake Tanganyika in Africa. Its long, flowing fins and distinct lyretail make it a captivating addition to any cichlid aquarium.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Notable for its pale, creamy body adorned with a subtle pearlescent sheen and elongated white filaments extending from the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins.
  • Features a distinctive black stripe that runs along the edge of its gill cover and a blue shimmer around the eyes.
  • Adults can reach up to 4-5 inches (10-13 cm) in length in captivity.

Natural Habitat:

  • Inhabits the rocky coastlines of Lake Tanganyika, where it prefers areas with abundant rocks and caves for shelter and breeding.
  • Thrives in clear, warm water with a high mineral content, typical of African Rift Lake environments.

Care and Aquarium Setup:

  • Requires an aquarium setup that mimics its natural rocky habitat, with plenty of hiding spots and territories created using rocks and caves.
  • A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended for a small group, with larger tanks necessary for establishing a community.
  • Water conditions should be maintained with temperatures between 75-79°F (24-26°C) and a pH range of 8.0-9.0, reflecting the alkaline nature of their native lake.

Diet:

  • Omnivorous, with a preference for protein-rich foods. In the wild, their diet includes small invertebrates and plankton.
  • In captivity, they should be fed a variety of foods, including high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen or live brine shrimp, and daphnia, supplemented with vegetable matter.

Behaviour and Compatibility:

  • Known for their complex social structure and monogamous breeding pairs. They exhibit cooperative breeding behavior, with older offspring often helping to care for the young.
  • While generally peaceful towards other species, they can be territorial with their own kind, especially during breeding.
  • Best kept with other Tanganyika cichlids of similar size and temperament.

The Brichardi Cichlid is not only admired for its beauty but also for its fascinating social behavior, making it a prized species for intermediate to advanced cichlid enthusiasts.
